Former Sheffield United Defender George Baldock Found Dead at Age 31 in Greece
Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has tragically passed away at the age of 31, according to reports from Greek media. Baldock was reportedly found dead in the swimming pool of his home in Glyfada, Greece. No further details about the circumstances surrounding his death have been made available.
Baldock had recently left England in the summer of 2024 to join Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League after a successful seven-year spell with Sheffield United, where he played in both the Championship and Premier League.
The Greek Super League released an official statement expressing their sorrow: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our National Team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Baldock began his professional football career at MK Dons before joining Sheffield United in 2017. He was an integral part of the Blades’ two promotion campaigns and helped the team achieve a ninth-place finish in the Premier League in 2020. He made 219 appearances for Sheffield United, scoring six goals and providing 16 assists, and was a fan favorite during his time at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United paid tribute to Baldock on social media: “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.”
Baldock was also a 12-time Greece international and had played four times for Panathinaikos this season. He was not part of the Greece squad for their upcoming Nations League match against England at Wembley.
