Leon Bailey Football Career
Here, we take a closer look at his football career so far.
Club Career
Early Career
Leon Bailey began his football journey at the Phoenix All-Star Academy, which was run by his adoptive father, Craig Butler. In 2011, Butler took Bailey and his biological son, Kyle, to Europe in search of a club. Although Bailey impressed Belgian side Genk, he couldn’t sign due to FIFA rules about minors. He nearly joined Standard Liège, but the move fell through because Butler didn’t have a work permit. At 13, Bailey signed with Austrian non-league club Anif Jugend, and later moved to Liefering.
In early 2013, he signed a professional contract with Slovakian club Trenčín. That October, he verbally agreed to a move to Ajax, but FIFA regulations again prevented the transfer.
Genk
Bailey eventually joined Genk in 2015 from Trenčín. He made his Belgian Pro League debut in August 2015 and scored his first professional goal in November of that year. He had a strong first season, winning the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award. His Europa League goal against Rapid Wien in September 2016 was named the best of the competition for that season.
Bayer Leverkusen
In January 2017, Bailey transferred to Bayer Leverkusen for €20 million, after attracting interest from clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea. He debuted in February 2017 in a match against Hamburg, and later that month played his first Champions League game against Atlético Madrid.
Bailey scored his first goal for Leverkusen in a German Cup match in August 2017. His first Bundesliga goal came in September against Schalke 04. He ended the season with 12 goals in 34 appearances, helping Leverkusen finish fifth in the league. In November 2019, he scored twice in a win over Bayern Munich, one with each foot.
Aston Villa
Bailey joined Aston Villa on 4 August 2021 at the age of 23. He made his Premier League debut shortly after in a loss to Watford. On 18 September, he scored his first Villa goal in a win over Everton and also played a part in an own goal.
Injuries disrupted his first season, including hamstring, quad, thigh, and ankle problems, which limited him to just seven starts.
On 6 November 2022, Bailey scored the first goal under new manager Unai Emery in a 3–1 win over Manchester United and was named Player of the Month. In December 2023, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory against Manchester City, Villa’s first win over them since 2013.
Bailey also played a key role in Aston Villa’s European campaign, scoring against Hibernian and Ajax. Though Villa was eliminated by Olympiakos in the semi-finals, Bailey helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League by scoring 10 Premier League goals and securing a fourth-place finish.
In the 2024–25 season, Bailey scored his first goal against Leicester on match day 20. On 4 March 2025, he became the second Jamaican to score in the UEFA Champions League after netting in a 3–1 win over Club Brugge. Senior Team
In 2017, Bailey initially declined call-ups to Jamaica’s national team, citing long-standing issues with the football association. Former national coach Winfried Schäfer said he tried to recruit Bailey multiple times, but was blocked by Bailey’s stepfather.
Bailey appeared to accept a call-up in 2018, but later backed out, reportedly because his brother was not selected.
In 2019, Bailey agreed to join Jamaica’s squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He made his debut on 17 June 2019 against Honduras and scored his first international goal on 6 September 2019 in a 6–0 win over Antigua and Barbuda.
Although it was believed Bailey could play for England due to his grandparents’ British citizenship, he was later found ineligible since none of them were born in England.
In March 2024, Bailey announced on a podcast that he was taking a break from the Jamaican national team, citing unprofessional treatment from the Jamaica Football Federation.
Although listed in Jamaica’s 2024 Copa America squad, Bailey and his stepfather confirmed he would not participate. As a result, the federation temporarily suspended him from national team selection.
