Mads Roerslev Football Career
Here, we take a closer look at his football career so far.
Club Career
FC Copenhagen
A right-back, Roerslev came up through the academy at FC Copenhagen and made his senior debut as a substitute in a Danish Cup third-round match against Jammerbugt FC on 26 October 2016. He marked the occasion by scoring in a 6–1 win. Roerslev made four more appearances that season and signed a new four-year contract in May 2017. He worked on improving his one-on-one defending with experienced right-back Tom Høgli.
However, Roerslev saw limited playing time during the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons. He went on loan to Halmstads BK and Vendsyssel FF but didn’t feature much for either team, which slowed his development. By the 2019–20 season, he was no longer in FC Copenhagen’s plans and left the club in August 2019 after making 13 senior appearances and scoring one goal.
Brentford
2019–20
On 7 August 2019, Roerslev moved to England to join the B team at Championship club Brentford on a two-year deal with an option for an extra year. He broke into the first team in October 2019, and after 10 appearances, he signed a new four-year contract and was officially promoted to the senior squad. He ended the season with 14 appearances.
2020–21
Roerslev missed the first four months of the season due to a metatarsal injury. He returned in January 2021, and following an injury to Henrik Dalsgaard, he became a regular starter in April. He held his spot through the playoffs, helping Brentford win promotion to the Premier League by assisting a goal in the Championship play-off final. He made 22 appearances that season.
2021–22
With Dalsgaard leaving and a shift to a 3-5-2 formation, Roerslev started the season behind Sergi Canós at right wing-back. The two shared the position throughout the campaign. Later in the season, due to injuries in central defense, Roerslev played as a right center-back. He ended the season with 26 appearances and scored once—the winner in a 2–1 win over Aston Villa on 2 January 2022.
2022–23
Roerslev started the season behind new signing Aaron Hickey and Kristoffer Ajer but stepped into the starting role in October 2022 after both players got injured. He signed a new three-year contract in February 2023 and made 23 appearances that season.
2023–24
Just like the previous season, Roerslev got more game time after Aaron Hickey was injured in October 2023. He played a career-high 38 matches and scored once in a 2–2 draw with Chelsea on 2 March 2024.
2024–25 and loan to VfL Wolfsburg
Due to the absence of Brentford’s first-choice full-backs, Roerslev started the season as the only natural right-back. He shared the role with Kristoffer Ajer and Sepp van den Berg and made 23 appearances. On 27 January 2025, he joined Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg on loan for the rest of the season. He made seven appearances, mostly as a substitute. The deal included an option to buy, but it wasn’t taken up.
International career
Roerslev represented Denmark at every youth level from U17 to U21. He was part of the country’s U17, U19, and U21 squads in various UEFA European Championships.
In May 2022, he was called to the senior national team’s training camp. In March 2024, he received his first official call-up but did not play. He was called up again in October 2024 for a Nations League match against Switzerland but remained on the bench. After Joakim Mæhle’s injury, Roerslev got another call-up for two Nations League matches in November 2024. He made his senior debut in the second match—a 0–0 draw with Serbia.
