Who is Malo Gusto?

Malo Gusto was born on May 19, 2003, in Décines-Charpieu, a town in the Lyon metropolitan area of France. Malo Gusto Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his football career so far.

Club Career

Lyon

Malo Gusto started playing at ASVF, later joining Bourgoin-Jallieu for a one-year spell, before entering the Lyon academy as an under-14, in a move similar to that of his fellow academy graduate Amine Gouiri. Gusto joined Lyon the same year the club moved to the Stade des Lumières, located in his hometown.

He was part of the same generation as Florent da Silva, Yaya Soumaré, and Rayan Cherki, and eventually signed his first professional contract with the club in December 2020. By that time, he had already appeared on the team sheet for several Ligue 1 games under manager Rudi Garcia and had shown promise in both the Youth League and National 2 with the reserves.

Gusto made his professional debut for Lyon on 24 January 2021, replacing Bruno Guimarães in the 90th minute of a 5–0 Ligue 1 win over Saint-Étienne in the Derby du Rhône. After another Ligue 1 appearance later that season, he signed a new contract in June 2021, extending his stay with the club until 2024.

He started his first match during Lyon’s opening game of the 2021–22 season against Brest on 7 August. By doing so, he became the youngest defender to start a Ligue 1 game for Lyon since Samuel Umtiti.

Although he initially appeared behind Dubois in the right-back pecking order, Gusto still made notable appearances under coach Peter Bosz. He started in key games, including a 2–0 Europa League win against Rangers and a 2–1 Ligue 1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea

On 29 January 2023, Chelsea announced the signing of Malo Gusto on a contract running until 2030. Lyon confirmed the transfer fee as €30 million plus €5 million in bonuses. He was loaned back to Lyon for the remainder of the 2022–23 season.

On 13 August, Gusto made his Chelsea debut in a 1–1 Premier League draw against Liverpool. On 24 September, he received the first red card of his career following a VAR review of a late challenge on Lucas Digne during a home defeat to Aston Villa.

International career

Born in France, Gusto is of Portuguese descent on his father’s side and Martiniquais descent on his mother’s side. He began his international journey with France as a midfielder for the under-16 team before transitioning to fullback roles with the U17 and U18 teams. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not play any official matches for the U18s, as most youth competitions were canceled during 2020–2021.

In September 2021, with international play resuming, Gusto earned a call-up to the France U19 team. He participated in a friendly tournament in Slovenia against Russia, Slovakia, and the hosts, starting and playing every minute of all three matches, even wearing the captain’s armband.

Just a month later, both Gusto and Rayan Cherki were promoted to the under-21 team by coach Sylvain Ripoll. They debuted on 8 October 2021, coming off the bench in a 5–0 win against Ukraine in the UEFA Euro U21 qualifiers.

On 9 October 2023, Gusto received his first call-up to the France senior national team for matches against the Netherlands and Scotland, replacing the injured Jules Koundé. He made his international debut on 13 October 2023, coming off the bench in the 80th minute during a 2–1 European Championship qualifier win against the Netherlands, helping France secure qualification.
