A fan who racially abused Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze in two matches at Mallorca last year has been found guilty and given a suspended prison sentence, according to Real Madrid’s statement on Thursday.
The individual, whose name was not revealed, received a 12-month suspended sentence after apologizing to Vinicius in a letter and completing anti-discrimination training. Additionally, the fan has been banned from attending stadiums for three years.
Real Madrid noted this as the third recent criminal conviction for racist abuse directed at their players, and the club reiterated its commitment to combating racism in football.
The incidents involving Vinicius and Chukwueze occurred at the Son Moix stadium in Palma, Mallorca, within two weeks of each other. In one game, fans were caught on video calling Vinicius a monkey. Vinicius has been outspoken about the racism he has faced in Spanish football.
Additionally, a minor who racially abused Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in April has apologized, participated in educational activities, and was fined. The youth was also banned from stadiums for one year.
