Lionel Messi Scores in Inter Miami’s 1-1 Draw Against Charlotte FC as Playoff Hopes Fade

Lionel Messi (37) scored the equalizer as Inter Miami drew 1-1 with Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer on Saturday. This marked Miami’s third consecutive draw, but the team remains top of the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings, already securing a playoff spot.

Charlotte, coached by Dean Smith, took the lead in the 57th minute when Brandt Bronico’s shot deflected off Karol Swiderski and beat Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callender. Messi then sparked Miami’s response, first forcing a save from Charlotte keeper Kristijan Kahlina, before finding the net with a left-footed shot from outside the box for his 15th goal in 15 games this season.

Miami thought they had a chance to win when Diego Gomez was awarded a penalty after being brought down by Adilson Malanda, who was shown a second yellow card. However, VAR overturned the decision, ruling that Malanda had played the ball. Late in stoppage time, Luis Suarez had a chance to win it for Miami but missed from close range.

Despite the frustration of three straight draws, head coach Gerardo Martino put things in perspective, saying, “We were a team that habitually lost for years, and now, we habitually win, which raises expectations. Yes, we’re frustrated, but we’ve worked hard to change this team’s perception.”

Elsewhere in MLS, several teams secured their playoff spots. New York City FC beat the New York Red Bulls 5-1 in the Hudson River derby, with both teams now confirmed for the playoffs. Orlando City kept their strong form with a 3-1 win over FC Dallas, while LAFC also booked their place with a 2-1 victory against FC Cincinnati. Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo also confirmed their playoff spots.

Miami remains in first place with 65 points, with Columbus Crew and Cincinnati trailing. Miami can clinch the Supporters’ Shield with a win or draw against Columbus on Wednesday.
