5.Steve Nicol (1982 – 1995)
Stephen Nicol is a retired Scottish professional footballer who primarily played as a right back and occasionally played other positions in defense and midfield. He played for the highly successful Liverpool teams of the 1980s. He was one of Liverpool’s Top Defenders.
Steve Nicol is one of the best defenders to have ever played for the club and his versatility made him invaluable. In fact, the £300,000 that Bob Paisley paid Ayr United to bring him to Anfield in October 1981 turned out to be one of the all-time bargains.
He was hired to challenge Phil Neal for the right-back job. Neal didn’t move and Nicol moved into right midfield. In his first full season, he came second in the PFA vote for most promising player of the year in 1983–84 behind Luton’s Paul Walsh, soon to become Red. The season nearly ended in disaster after he missed Liverpool’s first penalty in a shootout against AS Roma in the European Cup final, but Liverpool still won.
Nicol appeared for five Liverpool managers and made 468 appearances, scoring 46 goals. Overall, he won four league titles and three FA Cup winners’ medals before becoming a players’ coach at Notts County in 1995.

4. Tommy Smith (1962–1978)
Thomas Smith MBE (5 April 1945 – 12 April 2019) was an English footballer who played for 16 years as a defender for Liverpool from 1962 to 1978. Known for his uncompromising defensive style, manager Bill Shankly once said of him: ” Tommy Smith wasn’t born, he was expelled.” Smith spent most of his career as a central defender.
But contrary to what his critics may say, Smith is not your archetypal stopper. Unlike many of his tough counterparts, he can also play quite a bit. More than 600 appearances in the Reds first team and a shiny winner’s medal is proof of that.
Smith’s progress in the Middle League was rewarded with a first-team debut at home against Birmingham at the end of the 1962-63 season.He was one of Liverpool’s Top Defenders.
Such was his growing reputation in the game that he was even the subject of an impertinent transfer request from Manchester United boss Matt Busby – a request which the offended Shanks quickly refused.
In 1965, Smith won his first major honor in the game when Liverpool won the FA Cup for the first time. The title came a year later and when the 1970s arrived, the formidable centre-back was appointed captain of the club.
In 1972/73 he was proud to be Liverpool’s first captain to lift a European trophy – but around the corner there was a hammer blow as hard as all his struggles.

3. Emlyn Hughes (1967–1979)
Emlyn Walter Hughes OBE is an English footballer. He started his career at Blackpool in 1964 before moving to Liverpool in 1967. He made 665 appearances for Liverpool and led the team to four league titles and one FA Cup victory in 1970.
Hughes left Liverpool after 665 games, scoring 49 goals for the club. His 59 caps for England while at Liverpool made him the club’s most capped player until Welsh striker Ian Rush broke the record more than a decade later. He was one of Liverpool’s Top Defenders.
Emlyn Hughes was the first Liverpool captain to win the European Cup, a fact which earned him a place in the Anfield Hall of Fame.
Hughes made his debut for Liverpool in a 2–1 win over Stoke City at Anfield on 4 March 1967. He scored his first goal in a 6–0 loss by Newcastle United at Anfield on 26 August of that year. After Liverpool was relegated from the Second Division. v Watford in the FA Cup quarter-finals, Shankly opted to throw away many veteran players who had won two Champions League titles and one FA Cup and reached the Cup Winners’ Cup final in the previous eight years. from Europe and recruiting young players to replace them.

2. Phil Neal (1974 – 1986)
Philip George Neal is a retired English footballer who played for Northampton Town, Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers as a full-back.
Phil Neal is the most decorated player in Liverpool history.
The full-back helped bring 22 silver coins to the Anfield trophy room and was the only player to appear in each of the Reds’ first four European Cup triumphs.
Neal left Anfield after 11 years in 1985, joining Bolton Wanderers as player-manager. He retired from the game in 1989 after more than 700 league appearances and 50 appearances for England.
A month after his low-key arrival, Neal made his senior debut with just hours to go, but made an impression early on by coping admirably with the intense pressure of a high-octane goalless Merseyside derby in Goodison park
From there, he became a near-permanent fixture in the legendary defense of the late 1970s, making a record 365 consecutive league appearances between December 1974 and September 1983.

1. Chris Lawler (1960 – 75)
Chris Lawler is a former footballer who enjoyed much of Liverpool’s success from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s.
Lawler was a great right back who held a regular position in the team between 1965 and 1973.
As well as being a scoring defender, he had an astonishing record of 61 goals in 549 games, which is especially remarkable when you consider that he was neither the club’s penalty taker nor a free-kick specialist.
Local lad Chris made it through the youth ranks at Anfield and signed professional forms on his 17th birthday in October 1960, but had to wait patiently until March 1963 before Bill Shankly made him debut in a home game with West Bromwich. Albion.
