The club was formed as Newton Heath LYR in 1878 by workers on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Renamed Manchester United in 1902, the club won its first English league championship in 1907–08. In 1910 the club moved from its old Bank Street ground to Old Trafford Stadium, which has been the team’s home ever since.

Manchester United’s history since the Second World War has been dominated by two long-serving managers. Sir Matthew Busby was appointed manager in 1945 and over the next 24 years, he led the club to five wins in the English league and two in the FA Cup. The club had to deal with tragedy in 1958 when a plane carrying the team crashed in Munich, killing 23 of the 44 onboard. In the 1960s, the team, rebuilt by Busby, included the highly talented attacking trio of Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Denis Law. In 1968, this team became the first English club to win the European Cup (now known as the Champions League) with a 4-1 victory over Portugal’s Benfica in the final.

Former Scottish team Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson led the club from 1986 to 2013 and presided over an unprecedented run of dominance in the English league. Manchester United has won 12 Premier League titles since that league’s inaugural season in 1992–93. In the 1998–99 season, the club achieved the first treble in English football history by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. A second Champions League victory came in the 2007-08 season.

2018-19 season

The 2018-19 season got off to a disastrous start, with a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford, in addition to other negative results that put the Red Devils out of contention for a Champions League spot, with the highlight being the defeat against to Derby County who eliminated the club from the League Cup in the second phase. But the situation changed with the departure of Mourinho and the arrival of Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Manchester started a series of victories, ending up in 4th place in the Premier League, and also staged a comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 of the Champions League. After being defeated 2-0 at home by the Parisian team, United won at the Parc des Princes 3-1, qualifying for the quarter-finals. But the good phase did not last long, as the club fell to Barcelona, losing both games, being a 3-0 at Camp Nou and before that game a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Shortly after, he also fell in the FA Cup, against Wolverhampton and returned to accumulate a series of defeats in the Premier League, including a resounding 4-0 by Everton and a defeat by rivals City by 3-1 at home. Thus United came out of the top 4 and ended up in 6th, placing where they ended the championship, not even managing to surpass the already relegated Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City in the last two rounds. United drew 1-1 with bottom-placed Huddersfield and ended their Premier League campaign in a melancholy fashion with a 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff.

Who is Manchester United Rivals?

Manchester City

At a local level, Manchester City is United’s great rival in the city, and together they make the classic City vs. United, in which Billy Meredith, Denis Law, Peter Schmeichel, and Carlos Tévez are the most successful characters on both sides. Animosities only developed from the 1960s onwards, when United relegated City. Until then, it was common for fans of one club to friendly watch the matches of another, and the whole city was mourned at the time of the Munich tragedy.

Liverpool

However, a more intense rivalry is nurtured against Liverpool, the reciprocal being also true: in general, Liverpool fans hate United more than their city rivals, Everton.[52] This intercity feud developed in the 1970s, when Liverpool dominated the English and European scene, while United, a force majeure in the 60s, was in decline. The balance shifted towards the Red Devils in the 1990s. Peter Beardsley, Paul Ince, and Michael Owen are the most famous players to have played for both clubs. The rivalries between City and Liverpool are the most traditional.

Leeds United

Before hating Liverpool, however, United already had another intercity rival, Leeds United, marked by the fierce dispute for the English title in 1965, decided only on the tie-breaking criteria, which resulted in a lot of beating when the teams also faced each other in the FA Cup semi-final that year. Both had previously found each other strange for historical reasons, the War of the Two Roses, which broke out between the houses of Lancashire, where Manchester is located, and Yorkshire, where Leeds is located.

Both teams use exactly the colors of the rose symbols of their respective houses: Lancashire red and Yorkshire white. Gordon Strachan, Éric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand, and Alan Smith are the most famous to have made the switch between the two teams. The hatred between the fans continues even with the decline of Leeds, whose fans were among those who most celebrated the Munich tragedy in song. In response, some United fans like to extol Galatasaray, the Turkish club that defeated Leeds in the semi-finals of the 2000 UEFA Cup, in a game marked by the death of two England fans.

Arsenal

Another big rival is the London team Arsenal. This rivalry reached its peak in late 1999 and early 2000, when the leaders of the two teams, midfielder Roy Keane for Manchester and midfielder Patrick Vieira for Arsenal, had a certain hatred for each other and exchanged accusations and violent entries that ended up “infecting” his teammates and fans, creating a very special atmosphere around the game.

Which was, in the late ’90s and early ’00s (when Liverpool was in decline and City in a worse situation), the biggest classic in England. Interestingly, around the same time, Keane also developed a similar feud with the captain of Leeds United and Manchester City, the Norwegian Alf-Inge HÃ¥land, who ended up taking the worst and having to end his career after the Irishman’s violent entry into a Mancunian derby. Viv Anderson, Frank Stapleton, Brian Kidd, Mikaël Silvestre, Robin van Persie, and Danny Welbeck are some of the players who defended both teams. Kidd also played for Manchester City.
