Early Life
Girma was born in San Jose, California, to Ethiopian immigrants Girma Aweke and Seble Demissie, who met in the Bay Area. Nathaniel, her brother, is three years older than her. Both Amharic and English were spoken in her family.
As a child, Girma played soccer for the Maleda Soccer Club, which her father started for the Ethiopian community in the Bay Area in 2005. She also played basketball at Hacienda Elementary School and the YMCA after school, just like her brother. She did gymnastics for five years before she decided to focus on soccer in middle school.
After impressing coaches at a practice she was invited to by a friend in 2009, Girma joined the Central Valley Crossfire youth club in 2010 and stayed with it until it closed in 2017. Girma played at Crossfire for coach Bob Joyce, who encouraged her to take part in Olympic Development Program events and invited her to the U.S. U-14 national team camp. She played for the California Thorns Academy, Pioneer High School, and De Anza Force as a guest player after that.

Girma was the first player picked in the 2022 NWSL Draft. She was picked by San Diego Wave FC. She was named NWSL Best XI of the Month in May and June 2022. In June, she was also named NWSL Rookie of the Month. She was named both NWSL Defender of the Year and NWSL Rookie of the Year at the end of the season.
International career
Girma played for the under-17, under-19, and under-20 teams for the United States. She led a team of people under 20. Girma was chosen as the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year for 2020 in December 2020.
Girma was called up to the U.S. senior team for the first time in December 2019, but she had to drop out because she hurt herself. In October 2020, she was called up again. She played her first game for the senior national team on April 12, 2022, against Uzbekistan in a friendly match. She also played in the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship.
