Liverpool overcame a tough challenge to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the Premier League, marking their 15th win in their last 16 meetings with Wolves.
Wolves started strong, putting pressure on Liverpool early on, though Jean-Ricner Bellegarde missed a good chance. The home side’s main issue came from goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, whose mistakes with his feet caused some nervous moments. Mario Lemina almost capitalized on a poor pass from Alexis Mac Allister, but Liverpool’s defense managed to clear the danger.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was the busier of the two early on, making key saves, including a catch from Matheus Cunha’s curling effort. As Liverpool grew into the game, they started to threaten Wolves’ defense, with Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold both having shots on goal.
Liverpool came close to scoring in the 40th minute when Andrew Robertson set up Dominik Szoboszlai, but Johnstone made an instinctive save. However, Liverpool finally broke the deadlock just before halftime when Ibrahima Konate headed in Diogo Jota’s cross, scoring his first-ever Premier League goal.
In the second half, Wolves struggled to mount a meaningful comeback, and Mohamed Salah nearly doubled Liverpool’s lead after Lemina gifted him the ball in the box. A defensive error from Konate allowed Wolves a way back into the game, with Rayan Ait-Nouri equalizing after a chaotic sequence in the Liverpool defense.
Wolves’ joy was short-lived, though, as Nelson Semedo conceded a penalty by pulling down Jota. Salah stepped up and calmly converted to restore Liverpool’s lead. Konate redeemed himself with a crucial block to deny Carlos Forbs, while Salah missed an opportunity to set up Curtis Jones for a third goal.
Despite some late drama, Liverpool held on for their fourth consecutive win across all competitions, moving them to the top of the Premier League table.
