Louise Quinn Football Career
Here, we take a closer look at her Football career so far.
Louise Quinn Club Career
Quinn started playing organized soccer with the Blessington Boys’ when she was 6. Her friend Derek Balfe and his father, Vincent, who led the team, were also on the team. Then, Quinn played girls’ soccer for Lakeside FC of Wicklow before joining Peamount United of County Dublin in 2004.
When Eileen Gleeson took over as coach of Peamount United in 2006, she saw Quinn’s promise and made her the 16-year-old club captain. Quinn led Peamount to the FAI Women’s Cup final in 2008 but lost to St. Francis 2–1 at Richmond Park. In 2010, Peamount beat Salthill Devon 4–2 in the FAI Cup final to win the cup. Quinn missed the event because she was in the U.S. on work training.
In the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying round in Slovenia in August 2011, Quinn scored a hat-trick against NK Krka as Peamount beat them 7–0. Quinn helped Peamount United win the Women’s National League’s first season in 2011–12, and she was named to the Team of the Season.
After Peamount was knocked out of the last 32 of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain Féminine in September and October 2011, Quinn considered playing professionally overseas. “That’s when I started to think, ‘Could I go abroad?'” she said. Would I be enough?'”
In January 2013, Quinn went to the Swedish team Eskilstuna United. She did well in Sweden. Eskilstuna was moved up from the Elitettan to the top-level Damallsvenskan in her first season. In her second season, Eskilstuna came seventh in the Damallsvenskan.
The team came in second to FC Rosengrd in 2015, and boss Viktor Eriksson said Quinn was one of the best defenders in the league. 2016 Quinn was the team captain and was always in the league. She also played for the club in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. In November 2016, she chose to leave Eskilstuna.
Quinn signed with Notts County in February 2017, but the team went out of business in April, right before the FA WSL Spring Series season started. On May 3, 2017, Quinn signed a short-term contract with Arsenal of the FA WSL. In May 2019, she signed a new deal. Quinn was a key member of the Arsenal team that won the 2018 FA WSL Cup Final and the 2018–19 FA WSL. She played less often in 2019–20, and when her contract ran out in June 2020, she could leave for free.
Fiorentina, The Italian Serie A women, gave Quinn a one-year deal with an option for another year in July 2020. After the 2020–21 season, in which Fiorentina placed fourth in the League and lost the Supercoppa Italiana final to Juventus 2-0, Quinn chose not to take the one-year extension and left the club.
Instead, Quinn signed a deal with Birmingham City for two years. She was made club captain right away, and her first game was a 1–0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on the first day of the season. Birmingham brought in a few more Irish players, and by January 2022, Quinn was one of seven Irish players on the City team.
Even though Quinn was the team’s top scorer with five goals and was named “Signing of the Season” by The Guardian for the FA WSL, Birmingham City placed last in the league and was kicked out at the end of the 2021–22 FA WSL season. As part of her contract, Quinn could leave if her team got relegated. Before choosing whether or not to stay, she asked the club for guarantees that their training facilities would improve.
Ultimately, Quinn chose to stay with Birmingham City in the second tier. She said she liked the Irish ties of the club and working with coaches Darren Carter and Jo Potter.
Louise Quinn International career
Youth
Quinn was captain of the Ireland under-19 women’s national football team, playing 25 games. She also played five times for the Ireland under-17 team. She was put on the national under-17 team when she was only 14, but the next year, a hip fracture that took 10 months to heal stopped her growth for a while.
Senior
Quinn played her first game as an adult in February 2008, when she replaced Niamh Fahey in the last minute of a 4–1 friendly win over Poland at John Hyland Park in Baldonnel, Dublin. In October 2008, Quinn was chosen as one of 22 players for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 qualifying play-off against Iceland. Ireland’s boss, Noel King, called it “without a doubt, the biggest game in the history of women’s football in Ireland.”
In February 2009, Quinn got his second cap after coming on as a replacement in a friendly loss to France by a score of 2-0. Quinn was named the FAI Senior Women’s International Player of the Year in 2013 after she became a regular in the middle of Ireland’s defence.
Quinn kept getting picked by national team coach Susan Ronan and played in Ireland’s failed attempt to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. On April 5, 2014, at Tallaght Stadium, Quinn headed in Megan Campbell’s long throw-in to give Ireland a 1-0 lead over Germany. This was the first goal the Germans had given up in the series, but Ireland lost 3–2 when Melanie Leupolz scored the winning goal in stoppage time.
Quinn kept her spot on the national team when Colin Bell took over Ronan’s job. She played in Bell’s first game as coach, a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic at the 2017 Cyprus Cup on March 1.
After a long disagreement with the Football Association of Ireland, Quinn was part of a group of 13 players who won much better working conditions for the women on Ireland’s national team the following month. After breaking her nose in a 2–0 loss to Norway in Tallaght, she wore a face mask to play in a 1–0 loss to the same team four days later. This loss kept Ireland from qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Quinn got the FAI Senior Women’s International Player of the Year award for the second time in 2019. During the year, she played in all of Ireland’s games. She was upset and angry when Colin Bell quit as a coach in June 2019.
Quinn remained an important player for Ireland under Vera Pauw during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 qualifying Group I and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification – UEFA Group A competitions. Her goal was the game-winner in a 3–2 friendly win over Australia on September 21, 2021, at Tallaght Stadium. This ended an 18-month losing streak of seven games.
In September 2022, she said that Ireland had eliminated the “Spursy” label. This was after much better success helped the team qualify for the UEFA playoffs for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
