Early Life

Aoibheann Clancy, born on October 31, 2003, hails from Kilbehenny in County Limerick, Ireland. She began her football journey with Kilburn Celtic and Tipperary Town in the Tipperary Schoolboys/girls Southern & District League (TSSDL). Her youth career also included stints with Limerick WFC’s youth team.

At Presentation School in Thurles, Aoibheann excelled in soccer, earning the FAI Young Player of the Year Award in December 2021. She also represented Ireland at the U17 level, notably scoring in all three games during the UEFA Women’s U17 European Championship qualifiers in Lithuania in 2019.

Transitioning to senior football, Aoibheann joined Wexford Youths in 2020, making her league debut against Bohemians on August 8, 2020. She re-signed for the 2023 season, making 24 appearances and earning the club’s Player of the Season award. In February 2025, she signed with Shelbourne, continuing her career in the Women’s National League.

Internationally, Aoibheann made her senior debut for the Republic of Ireland in a 4-0 victory over Morocco in November 2022. She was subsequently named in the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Finland in October 2021. In March 2025, she was called up for the Nations League matches against Greece, aiming to solidify her role in the national team under new manager Carla Ward.

Aoibheann Clancy Club Career

Clancy comes from Kilbehenny in Limerick County. She played girls’ Gaelic football for Galtee Gaels and Camogie for St. Fanahan’s when she was young. When she was younger, she played for Kilburn Celtic and Tipperary Town in the Tipperary Schoolboys/girls Southern & District League (TSSDL). Later, she joined the youth program of Limerick WFC, a club in the Women’s National League.

Clancy joined Wexford Youths before the 2020 Women’s National League season, which had to be moved back. In September 2020, she made her first start for her new team when Wexford beat Peamount United for the first time that season. Wexford coach Tom Elmes was impressed by Clancy’s play and said it was “one of the stand-out performances.”

During the 2021 Women’s National League season, Clancy kept up her good play. She was “instrumental” in Wexford Youths’ 3–1 win over Shelbourne in the 2021 FAI Women’s Cup Final. At the 2021 WNL Awards, she was named to the Team of the Season. She also won the Young Player of the Year award, beating Ellen Molloy and Jessie Stapleton.

International career

Clancy was an Irish girl’s team member when she went to Presentation School in Thurles. In the 2017 John Read Cup final, Ireland beat England, and she was named Player of the Match. She was also the team’s vice-captain that won the prize again the next year.

She moved up to the Republic of Ireland women’s national under-17 football team, and by 2021, she was playing for the Dave Connell’s Republic of Ireland women’s national under-19 football team. She only showed up once during the whole year.

Senior

Clancy’s first adult game was a friendly against Australia at Tallaght Stadium on September 21, 2021. Vera Pauw, in charge of the Dutch national team, was pleased by how well she played for her club and at home. Clancy got her first senior cap on November 14, 2022, when she replaced Denise O’Sullivan in the 62nd minute of a 4–0 friendly win over Morocco in Marbella, Spain. The game was friendly.
