Forsyth Barr Stadium, also known as the Dunedin Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Opoho and is the home of the Highlanders, a professional rugby team that plays in the Super Rugby competition. The stadium has a seating capacity of 30,000 and is known for its unique roof design, which is made of a transparent material that allows natural light to enter the stadium. In addition to sporting events, the Forsyth Barr Stadium has also hosted concerts and other events. The stadium was opened in 2011 and is considered one of the most modern and innovative sports venues in New Zealand.

The stadium was opened by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on 5 August 2011, replacing Carisbrook as the home ground for the Highlanders team in Super Rugby and the Otago Rugby Football Union team in the domestic Miter 10 Cup. The stadium hosted four matches in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and has hosted major music tours, beginning in November 2011 with Elton John. The venue will host multiple matches of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Forsyth Barr Stadium History

What started as an idea and a dream, today is a reality. The only fully roofed natural grass stadium in the world! The first pile was buried in the ground one winter’s day in 2009 and was officially opened by John Key in 2011 ahead of the Rugby World Cup, where 100,000 fans partied under the roof.

Design

The stadium was designed by Populous and Jasmax in a joint venture, and is the world’s first fully enclosed turf stadium (albeit reinforced with Desso GrassMaster synthetic turf fibers) since the original grass field of the Astrodome in Houston was replaced in 1966 for what would become known as AstroTurf. The stadium roof was constructed using a transparent ETFE roof supplied and installed by Vector Foiltec, the same material used on the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Water Cube in Beijing.

The stadium was designed as a versatile venue and is expected to be able to host a variety of events including sports (rugby union, rugby league, football, basketball, netball), concerts, trade fairs, and other large-scale events. The use of relocatable seats allows flexibility to accommodate a variety of event requirements. Due to size limitations, some sports (such as cricket, a popular sport in New Zealand) are not allowed to use the stadium.

It has a maximum capacity of 30,748 seats in full sports mode and a capacity of more than 36,000 for concerts. There are permanent bleachers to the south and north with removable seats in the east and west bleacher areas. The West Stand area, officially called the Miter 10 Mega Stand, is also known as the zoo and is popular with the student population.
