Fran Kirby Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at her Football career so far.

Fran Kirby Club Career

Reading, 2012–15

Kirby started playing for Reading, her neighbourhood team when she was seven years old and worked her way up through the youth teams. She played for the first team for the first time when she was sixteen, but she quit the next year because her mother’s death made her feel sad. Kirby returned to the club in 2012 and scored 32 goals in 21 games, making her the top scorer in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division for the 2012–13 season.

Reading was moved up to the Women’s Super League 2 for 2014, and Kirby scored 24 goals in 16 games to help the team finish third. She was the league’s top scorer by the end of the season. She scored four goals against London Bees and three hat tricks against Durham, Watford, and Doncaster Rovers Belles. Shortly after that, the club gave her the first official contract for a female player. Kirby was named the first WSL2 Player of the Year at the 2014 FA Women’s Awards.

Kirby kept getting goals in the 2015 WSL2 season. She scored 11 goals in five league games for Reading, including all four goals in a 4–2 away win against Yeovil Town and five in a 7–0 win against London Bees. After the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Chelsea offered Reading a transfer fee not made public. In July 2015, she moved to Chelsea. It was said that the fee, between £40,000 and £60,000, was a British record, but Chelsea rejected this, and Kirby didn’t know what the number was.

Since 2015, Chelsea

Kirby couldn’t play in the 2015 FA Women’s Cup Final, held at Wembley Stadium for the first time. She watched from the stands as Chelsea beat Notts County 1-0. It was the first big prize Chelsea ever won. In October 2015, she scored twice in Chelsea’s 4–0 win over Sunderland, which gave the club its first FA WSL title and a league and cup double. In the same month, Kirby scored Chelsea’s first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League goal in a 1-0 win over Glasgow City.

Kirby continued to play well in the 2016 FA WSL season. In April, she scored a late goal in extra time against Manchester City in the FA Women’s Cup semi-final to get Chelsea back to Wembley Stadium. She scored both goals in Chelsea’s 2-0 WSL win at Arsenal four days later.

Kirby won the PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year award and the Football Writers’ Women’s Footballer of the Year award for the 2017–18 season on April 22, 2018.

Chelsea said in February 2020 that Kirby had been diagnosed with pericarditis, which had kept her off the team since November 2019. Even though cardiologists said she might never play again, she got over her illness and played 70 minutes in Chelsea’s win over Manchester City in the FA Community Shield on August 29, 2020. Kirby overtook Eniola Aluko as Chelsea’s all-time goal scorer on December 9, 2020, when she scored two goals in a 5–0 win over Benfica in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Five years after she joined, these were her 69th and 70th goals for the club.

On January 10, 2021, Kirby scored four goals in a game between Chelsea and her old team, Reading. Chelsea won 5–0. Kirby scored two goals and set up four others as defending winner Chelsea beat Bristol City W.F.C. 6–0 at Vicarage Road in the 2021 FA Women’s League Cup final.

People noticed that Kirby was Chelsea’s best player during their double-winning season of 2020–21. She later won the Women’s Footballer of the Year award from the FWA in 2021. Kirby scored the first goal in the delayed 2020–21 FA Cup final against Arsenal on December 5. This helped her team win the trophy and become the first English women’s club to win the home quadruple in the 2020–21 season.

Fran Kirby International career

Kirby played for England’s under-23 team at the beginning of her career. In June 2014, she was the first player from the WSL 2 to be called up to the senior squad for World Cup matches against Belarus and Ukraine. She was put on the bench for the game against Belarus, but she did not play. In August 2014, she played her first game for her country against Sweden. She scored the second goal in a 4–0 friendly win at Victoria Park, Hartlepool.

In May 2015, England boss Mark Sampson put Kirby in his final team for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was held in Canada. England beat Mexico 2-1, and Sampson called her a “mini Messi” after she scored in that game. Kirby was sad that she couldn’t play after the quarterfinals because of an injury, but England’s third-place finish gave her a good overall impression of the tournament. “It was a fantastic experience that I won’t forget in a hurry,” she said.

Kirby stayed on the national team for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 qualifiers. On September 21, 2015, in Estonia, she scored twice as England beat Estonia 8–0. After “12 months of hell” because of knee and ankle problems, Kirby was back on the field for England at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 in the Netherlands.

In England’s first game, against foes Scotland, second striker Kirby used a clever dummy to set up Jodie Taylor for the first goal of a 6–0 win. Kirby and Taylor scored goals in the next game as England beat Spain 2-0 to move on to the quarter-finals. Kirby was upset when the hosts beat England 3–0 in the semi-final. “We had chances and could have gotten a few penalties,” he said. We are extremely upset.”

On October 6, 2018, England beat Brazil 1-0 in a friendly game at Meadow Lane. In comments after the game, England coach Phil Neville said Kirby was better than Marta, who has won the World Player of the Year award six times. She said, “I’d take my No. 10 over Brazil’s No. 10, that’s for sure.”

Kirby was a part of the England team that won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 in June 2022.

When the FA announced their legacy number plan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of England’s first international, Kirby was given the number 186.

Kirby said in 2023 that she wouldn’t be able to play in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 because she needed surgery for a knee problem that had been bothering her for a long time.

British Isles

At the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, Kirby was called a “standout player” on the team that won gold for Great Britain. She then represented Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which had to be moved back.
