Maria Thorisdottir Club Career

Klepp

Thorisdottir’s first team was Klepp IL in Norway’s top league. In Klepp’s youth program, she started as a midfielder or striker. On the young national team, she made her first switch to centre-back. She played her first game for the first team as a substitute in the 66th minute of a 0-0 draw with Amazon Grimstad on April 5, 2010. She got her first goal for the team on August 29, 2010, in the 90th minute of a 3–1 loss to Arna-Bjrnar.

Thorisdottir quit football in September 2012 because she kept getting hurt. Patellar tendinitis was the main problem. During this time, she started playing handball, and in June 2013, she signed with Stabaek.

Thorisdottir decided to play football again in 2014 and started working with Klepp again. Two years after her last game, she returned on August 6, 2014, starting in a 1–0 win over Arna-Bjrnar in the Norwegian Cup.

Thorisdottir was out of action again in August 2015 because she had torn a muscle in her ankle. Thorisdottir was almost ready to come back, but she had another setback when doctors found a rare and difficult problem with her foot that, if left untreated, could end her career. She had surgery in November 2015, so she couldn’t play during the 2016 season.

Chelsea

Thorisdottir left Klepp in September 2017 to sign a two-year deal with the English FA WSL team Chelsea. She played for the team for the first time on September 24, 2017, when they beat Bristol City 6-0 in the WSL. Thorisdottir made 10 league starts in her first season with the club, and Chelsea won the FA WSL title for 2017–18.
