Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Matt Godden Club Career

Early career

Godden began his career at Scunthorpe United and made the decision to move from Kent at the age of 15 to take up Scunthorpe’s offer of a place on the club’s apprenticeship program. He progressed through the various youth levels at Scunthorpe before signing his first professional contract at the end of the 2008-09 season. Godden’s youth career at Scunthorpe was hampered by nagging injuries, and he claims that the management and managers of the Scunthorpe youth team, particularly Tony Daws, showed great faith in him in offering him the professional contract.

Loan spells

Various injuries kept Godden out of action for several months and he did not play for Scunthorpe for the first half of the 2011-12 season. In March 2012, having not played football for over a year, Godden joined Conference North club, Gainsborough Trinity, on a one-month loan deal. The move meant that he joined manager Steve Housham, who had managed Godden during his brief loan spell at Brigg Town two and a half years earlier.

Godden made his Gainsborough debut a day after signing, on 10 March 2011, he came on as a 58th-minute substitute and scored two minutes later in a 3–2 win against Nuneaton Town at The Northolme. Godden made eight appearances during the loan spell, scoring twice, his other goal coming when Gainsborough secured a 2–0 win over Eastwood Town on 24 March 2012. He returned to Scunthorpe on loan deal expiry on 9 April 2012 and made his first appearance for the club in a year and a half when he came on as a late substitute in Scunthorpe’s final game of the season, a 1–1 away draw with Tranmere Rovers on 5 May 2012.

Ebbsfleet United

With Godden’s contract due to expire at the end of the month, there were discussions about the possibility of a new contract at Scunthorpe in May 2014. Scunthorpe was aware of interest from various clubs in Godden and therefore offered him a deal that it meant they would keep the compensation. rights, as well as the willingness to accept an offer in case another club is interested in signing him.

He subsequently signed a two-year contract with Conference South club Ebbsfleet United on 30 May 2014, to whom he had previously been on loan twice. Godden’s season began with an injury, which meant he missed the opening game of the season, and he did not score in the first 14 league games of his Ebbsfleet career, as he was deployed as a right winger, a position in that I had never played before.

This ended when he scored a hat-trick, playing striker, in a 3–0 win against Farnborough at Stonebridge Road in November 2014, which in turn gave Ebbsfleet their first home win in four games. Godden scored a forty-yard volley at Bromley in March 2015, described as “a goal of the season candidate”, which turned out to be the winner in a 2–1 win. He ended the season having scored 13 times in 37 appearances in all competitions, as Ebbsfleet finished ten points shy of the play-off places in eighth place.

Stevenage

Godden’s contract at Ebbsfleet expired at the end of the season and he subsequently joined League Two club Stevenage on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal, on 6 June 2016. In doing so, he became the first signing of Darren Sarll as a full-time coach. of Stevenage. On joining Stevenage, Godden stated “I moved down to Ebbsfleet to rejuvenate and have regular football. The main aim was to get myself back on my feet and make a name for myself in the Football League and I thank Darren Sarll and Stevenage for this opportunity.” He made his Stevenage debut on the opening day of the 2016-17 season, playing the whole game in a 2-1 defeat against Crewe Alexandra at Broadhall Way.

Peterborough United

After Stevenage stated they were “open to offers” for the player, Godden signed for League One club Peterborough United on June 4, 2018. He joined Peterborough for an undisclosed six-figure fee and on a contract that was three years old. After signing for Peterborough, manager Steve Evans revealed, “I am absolutely delighted.” Matt is a young man who will undoubtedly score goals for Peterborough United. Godden scored in the first minute of his Peterborough debut in a 2–1 win over Bristol Rovers on August 4, 2018.

A scoring run followed, with Godden scoring eight goals in his first ten games for the club. In the first half of the season, he scored fourteen times, averaging a goal roughly every other game.
