Thammasat Stadium History

It was built for the 1998 Asian Games by the construction company Christiani and Nielsen, the same company that built the Democracy Monument in Bangkok.

Its appearance is that of a reduced version of the Rajamangala Stadium. The stands form a continuous ring that is quite low behind each arch but rises on each side. Unlike Rajamangala, however, Thammasat has a roof that covers both sides grandstands. The most striking thing about this stadium is the spotlights. Thai architects usually prefer concrete towers, but these are made of steel. Viewed from outside the stadium, the base of each tower appears to cling to the outside of the stadium and leans dramatically over the stands to better illuminate the playing area.

Thammasat was to be used for PEA FC’s match against Singapore Armed Forces FC in an Asian Champions League qualifier in February 2009, but the ground was deemed unplayable and the match was moved to Rajamangala.
