Early Life
Mohamed Naser Elsayed Elneny (Arabic: مُحَمَّد نَاصِر السَّيِّد النَّنِيّ; born 11 July 1992) is an Egyptian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for UAE Pro League club Al Jazira and the Egypt national team.
Elneny began his senior career in the Egyptian Premier League, before moving to Swiss club Basel in January 2013. He won eight honours at Basel, including the Swiss Super League in each of his four seasons. In January 2016, he transferred to Arsenal. He joined Beşiktaş on loan for the 2019–2020 season and departed Arsenal in 2024.
Elneny competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics for the Egyptian under-23 team. He has earned over 100 caps for the senior team since 2011, representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023, as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Mohamed Elneny Club Career
Al Mokawloon
Al Ahly was Elneny’s youth football team. He moved to Al Mokawloon in 2008 and played there from 2010 to 2011. Elneny developed and established himself as a dependable starter. The Egyptian Premier League was suspended and all remaining games of the 2011–12 Egyptian Premier League were postponed following the Port Said Stadium disaster in early February 2012. The Egyptian Football Association made the decision to halt the rest of the season public on March 10, 2012.
Basel
FC Basel had been watching Elneny for some time and invited him to their training camp in Estepona from 14 to 24 January 2013. Elneny played his unofficial debut on 18 January 2013 during the friendly match against Steaua București, a 1–1 draw. Elneny was able to impress Basel’s trainer Murat Yakin during the training camp and on 29 January 2013, it was announced that he had signed a loan contract with Basel up until the end of June 2013.Elneny played his official debut for Basel in the 2012–13 Swiss Super League season on 10 February 2013 in the 3–0 home win against Sion as he was substituted in at half time.
Arsenal
The signing of Elneny from FC Basel was officially announced by Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger on January 13, 2016, following a 3-3 draw with Liverpool. The deal was formally announced by the club the next day for an undisclosed sum that was reportedly between £5 million and £7.4 million. For Arsenal, he was given the number 35 jersey. On January 30, he became the first Egyptian to play for Arsenal when he made his debut for the team in a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Burnley. Elneny scored his first goal for Arsenal in the defeat to FC Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 match, and was later named Arsenal‘s Player of the Month for the month of March. He co-starred with in April as well.
Loan to Beşiktaş
Elneny signed a season-long loan agreement with Beşiktaş J.K. on August 31, 2019, which included a buyout option. Elneny was dismissed in his Super Lig debut against Gazisehir Gaziantep on September 14th, a 3-2 loss. He scored his first and only goal for the team in a 3-0 win over Genclerbirligi on July 25, 2020.
Return to Arsenal
Elneny was a member of the starting lineup for Arsenal’s 5-4 triumph over Liverpool in the 2020 FA Community Shield after the score remained tied at 1 after ninety minutes of play on August 28, 2020. Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba were rendered ineffectual by Elneny, Thomas Partey, and Arsenal on November 1, 2020, giving Arsenal their first league victory at Old Trafford since 2006. Following the game, Mikel Arteta, the manager, lauded Elneny. Elneny tested positive for COVID-19 but shown no symptoms while travelling with Egypt during the international break in November 2020, according to the Egyptian Football Association. He got back and scored his first goal of the season.
