When does the Premier League 2022/23 season start and end?

The 2022/23 Premier League season starts on Saturday 6th August 2022 and it will end on Sunday 28th May 2023.

When will the 2022-23 Premier League season start?

August 6, 2022, is the start date of the 2022-23 Premier League season.

The league will be paused after matchday 16, which ends on November 13, for the FIFA World Cup 2022. After finishing the show in Qatar, the Premier League will restart on December 26.

The 2021-22 Premier League season will end on Sunday 28 May 2023, and all matches on that day will start at the same time, as is tradition.

How does the World Cup affect the English Premier League?

The domestic season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar.

The final round of matches before the tournament, round 16, will be played over the weekend of November 12-13 with the league resuming on Boxing Day, eight days after the World Cup final.

What’s new for the 2022/23 season?

Aside from a winter World Cup that brought Europe’s top leagues to a halt mid-season, the biggest change currently on the horizon is the return of five substitutes to the Premier League.

The rule was introduced when the league returned from the Covid-imposed hiatus in the 2019/20 season, but managers were once again limited to just three substitutes last season after clubs voted to return to the status quo.

However, Premier League teams voted to bring back five substitutes permanently in March, with the rule coming into effect from the start of the new season.

The transfer window will remain open for just under 4 weeks before closing on Thursday, Feb 1.

Key European and international dates

The Champions League group stage begins on September 6/7, one week earlier than in the 2021/22 season. Group stage matches will be played in consecutive weeks, rather than two- and three-week intervals, to ensure they are completed before the World Cup.

The knockout rounds begin on February 14 and 15, while the final will take place on June 10 in Istanbul.

The group stages of the Europa League and Europa Conference League begin on September 8 and are completed on November 3, while the knockout rounds begin on February 16.

The Europa League final will be on May 31 in Budapest, while the Europa Conference League final will be on June 7 in Prague.

The World Cup is one of the main events on the calendar in the upcoming season. The tournament will take place in Qatar and kick off on November 21, just over a week after the Premier League goes on hiatus. The World Cup final is scheduled for December 18.

The winter World Cup has necessitated a reorganization of the international match schedule. The international break in September will be moved from the beginning to the end of the month, while in October there will be no international meetings.
