Ancelotti makes no excuses after Real Madrid’s shock defeat to Lille
Real Madrid, the defending Champions League winners, had a disappointing 1-0 loss to Lille on Wednesday. Coach Carlo Ancelotti, 65, admitted that the team didn’t play their best and deserved the criticism they received.
Lille pressed hard throughout the game and scored the only goal through a penalty by Jonathan David just before halftime. This loss was Real Madrid’s first in any competition since January.
Real Madrid, who have won the Champions League a record 15 times, have three points from two matches, after winning their first game against VfB Stuttgart.
Ancelotti said the team struggled with ball control and transitions, even though they were defensively solid in the first half. He also acknowledged that they tried to be more aggressive but couldn’t perform well.
He added that Lille deserved the win, even though Real improved in the second half and had chances to tie the game. Ancelotti believes the loss is a learning opportunity, and the team needs to focus on improving.
Real Madrid, currently second in LaLiga with 18 points, will face Villarreal, who are third, in their next match on Saturday.
