About Real Madrid

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Real Madrid, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid.

Founded in 1902 as Madrid Club de Fútbol, the club has traditionally worn the first white kit since its inception. The royal honorific is Spanish for “royal” and was bestowed on the club by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 along with the royal crown on the emblem. Real Madrid has played its home games at the 81,044-capacity Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in central Madrid since 1947. Unlike most European sports entities, Real Madrid members (partners) have owned and club operators throughout its history.

Real Madrid History

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol was founded on March 6, 1902, as Madrid Football Club. The club was established by a group of young football enthusiasts, led by the brothers Juan Padrós and Carlos Padrós, who were joined by several other players from the Swiss émigré community in Madrid. They played their first competitive match on May 13, 1902, against Arenas Club de Getxo in the semi-final of the Campeonato de Copa de S.M. Alfonso XIII, which they won 3-1.

In 1920, the club changed its name to Real Madrid, with the “Real” (meaning “royal” in Spanish) being added by King Alfonso XIII in recognition of the team’s success.

Real Madrid had its first major success in the 1930s, winning La Liga in 1932, 1936, 1954, 1955 and 1958, and the Copa del Rey in 1934, 1936 and 1954. The team then experienced a period of success in the 1950s, winning five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960, which included a 7-3 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 final.

Real Madrid continued to be successful throughout the years, winning the La Liga title many times, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Champions League and other international tournaments. In the 21st century, Real Madrid has been one of the most successful clubs in Europe, winning the Champions League four times (in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018), and La Liga twice (in 2016 and 2017).

The club has also been home to some of the greatest football players of all time, including Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and many others.

Real Madrid Home Stadium

After moving between various grounds, the team moved to O’Donnell’s Field in 1912, which remained their home stadium for 11 years. After this period, the club moved for a year to Campo de Ciudad Lineal, a small field with a capacity for 8,000 spectators. Subsequently, Real Madrid began to play their home games at the Chamartín Stadium, which was inaugurated on May 17, 1923, with a match against Newcastle United.

Real Madrid Kit

Real Madrid has kept the white shirt for its first kit throughout the club’s history. However, there was one season when the jersey and shorts were not both white. It was an initiative by Juan Padrós in honor of an English team, Corinthian F.C., whom he had met on one of his trips, one of the most famous teams of the time known for its elegance and sportsmanship.
