Akram was born in Doha, Qatar. He has a brother, Ali Afif, who is a footballer for the QSL Lekhwiya team. His father, Hassan Afif, is of Somali descent and was born in Moshi in Tanzania. His father previously played for Simba in Tanzania, but then moved to Somalia, where he went on to play for Horseed and the Somali national team. He subsequently moved to Qatar and played for Al Ittihad (later renamed Al Gharafa). After retiring, he led Al Gharafa from 1986 to 1987 and Al Markhiya from 2001 to 2003 and 2006 to 2007. His mother, Fayza, hails from Yemen.

Club Career

Youth Career

Akram Afif was born in Doha to a Tanzanian father of Somali origin and a Yemeni mother. He started in the youth teams of Al-Markhiya and then Al Sadd before joining Al Sadd as a full-time student in 2009. During his time at Aspire, Afif traveled to Spain on an exchange student program and played for the teams. youth from Seville and Villarreal.

He represented Sevilla in the 2013 Al Kass International Cup, scoring a brace and earning an assist in the team’s first game, which ended in a 3-0 victory against Aspire Academy.

In January 2015, Afif was signed by Eupen. He scored a goal on his debut against Eendracht Aalst on January 19. On January 24, in his next match against KRC Mechelen, he assisted in three of his team’s five goals.

Afif finished his first senior season with two goals in nine games. On March 18, 2016, he scored a brace in a 4-0 home win against KSV Roeselare.


On May 8, 2016, it was confirmed that Afif would rejoin Villarreal, this time indefinitely. In doing so, he became the first Qatari-born signing in LaLiga history. On August 4, he was loaned to top-tier club Sporting de Gijón on a one-season deal.

Afif made his debut in the top flight of Spanish football on August 21, 2016, replacing Burgui in a 2-1 win at home against Athletic Bilbao. After nine league games, he returned to his first senior club, Eupen, on a one-year loan on July 14, 2017. He returned to his home country in January 2018 to play for Al Sadd, where he had a very successful season.

International career

Afif participated in the qualifying campaign for the Qatar AFC U-20 U-19 Championship in 2014. During the main tournament, he scored the only goal in the final against Korea DPR to give Qatar victory.

He was called up to the senior team in September 2015 by manager Daniel Carreño. He scored in Qatar’s 15-0 win against Bhutan on 3 September 2015 during the 2018 World Cup qualifying rounds. He also recorded an assist in the match.

During Qatar‘s successful 2019 AFC Asian Cup campaign, Afif played a pivotal role in helping his team lift the trophy, registering 10 assists in total, a new tournament record.
