Boston Breakers (WPS) in 2010–2011
In the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer draught, the Boston Breakers picked Naeher with the 11th overall pick. She was the first goalkeeper to be picked in the 2010 WPS draught. On August 4, 2010, Naeher shut out the Atlanta Beat for the first time in her career. The Breakers came in second in the WPS standings, but they lost to the Philadelphia Independence in the Super Semifinal.
Turbine Potsdam, 2011–2013
After the 2011 WPS season was over, Naeher moved to Turbine Potsdam of the German Bundesliga. She played in 24 games in all competitions for Potsdam during the 2011–12 season, when they won the Frauen-Bundesliga. After the 2012 WPS season was put on hold, Naeher went back to Potsdam for the 2012/2013 season.
From 2013 to 2015, Boston Breakers
Naeher came back to the United States in May 2013 when she signed with the Boston Breakers of the newly formed National Women’s Soccer League. She had been playing soccer in Germany for two years.
Naeher played every minute of the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season for Boston. She won the Goalkeeper of the Year award because she made a record 106 saves in 24 games. Naeher was sent from the Boston Breakers to the Chicago Red Stars on November 22, 2015, in exchange for defender Whitney Engen.
From 2015 until now, Chicago Red Stars
Naeher had a great start to the 2016 NWSL season in Chicago. She was named Player of the Month for May because in four games she only gave up one goal and had three shutouts. The NWSL Media Association named Naeher Player of the Week in week 6 of the 2018 season. In June 2018, she was also named to the Team of the Month. Naeher played in her 100th NWSL game against the Portland Thorns on August 18, 2018. The game ended in a 2–2 tie.
Alyssa Naeher International career
At the 2007 Pan-American Games, Naeher played for the U.S. U-20 women’s football team, which finished second to Brazil. Naeher was the U-20 team’s starting goalie in 2008. She started all tournament games except one.
She allowed North Korea’s championship game goal. She won the Golden Glove Award for tournament goalkeeping. Naeher earned her USWNT debut and started a 7–0 triumph over Argentina in the International Tournament of Brazil on December 18, 2014. She shut out her first game.
Naeher was a backup for Hope Solo at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, but Solo played every minute as the United States won the tournament. Naeher was selected for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
During the 2016 Summer Olympics, Naeher replaced Solo as the USWNT’s top goalkeeper. At the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, Naeher played four games and had four shutouts as the US goalkeeper. The U.S. defeated Canada 2–0 to win their second CONCACAF Championship.
Women’s World Cup
Naeher made her second World Cup roster on May 2, 2019. Naeher entered the tournament as the U.S.’s number-one goalkeeper. When she started the team’s first group game on June 11, it was the first time in over two decades that neither Hope Solo nor Briana Scurry had started a World Cup game. Naeher recorded three consecutive shutouts in the group stage as the U.S. won 13–0 over Thailand, 3–0 over Chile, and 2–0 over Sweden.
In the knockout round, Naeher made four saves against France in the quarterfinals to help the team preserve a 2–1 victory over the host nation. In the semifinals, Naeher had three saves and stopped Steph Houghton’s penalty kick in the 83rd minute to help the United States defeat England 2–1. In Sunday’s final, Naeher made one save to help the U.S. win 2–0 over the Netherlands, repeating as World Cup champions. Naeher played all of the US’s triumphant 2019 World Cup.
2020s
