Andreas Weimann Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Andreas Weimann Club Career

Rapid Wien

Weimann, a Vienna native, started his career at his home town team FC Stadlau before switching to Rapid Wien at the age of thirteen. Before being signed by Premier League club Aston Villa and joining the team alongside fellow Austrian Dominik Hofbauer, he stayed there for three years. Since then, he has stated that he continues to support Rapid.

Aston Villa

In the 2009 Peace Cup matches against Porto, Atlante, and Juventus, Weimann played for the team. The striker played a key role for Aston Villa Reserves, especially in the 2009–10 campaign when he filled Nathan Delfouneso’s shoes, who left the team after finishing the year as the Reserve South League’s leading scorer with nine goals.

Weimann extended his contract with the team, keeping him there through June 2012, after a successful season in the reserves. After impressing manager Martin O’Neill during the Reserve Play-off Final against Manchester United on May 8, 2010, Weimann was named to the provisional squad for the season finale against Blackburn Rovers. He was not, however, one of the top 18 players chosen.

Weimann competed for Aston Villa in the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens event, which they won on May 16, 2010. His hat-trick against the Hong Kong Yau Yee League Select was one of the tournament’s high points.

Weimann scored twice for Aston Villa on July 27, 2010, against Walsall in a preseason friendly. Weimann made his first team debut on the first day of the following month, on August 6, against Valencia in a friendly at home.

Watford loan

Weimann signed a loan agreement with Watford on January 19, 2011, for the balance of the 2010–11 campaign. In the FA Cup loss against Brighton and Hove Albion, he made his professional debut for Watford. Then, on February 1, 2011, he scored in his league debut at home against Crystal Palace. Weimann was only signed on a youth loan, therefore throughout his time at Watford, he played for the reserve team of Aston Villa. Players can still represent their parent clubs under this arrangement, but only for youth and reserve teams. He participated in 19 games for Watford in all, scoring 4 goals.

Weimann returned to Aston Villa and made his first appearance of the 2011–12 campaign on August 23, 2011, during a home game against Hereford United in the League Cup’s second round. He was Darren Bent’s replacement in the second half as Villa advanced to the competition’s next round with a 2-0 victory. He re-signed his contract, keeping him at Villa Park through 2014, three days later, on August 26, 2013.

Weimann, however, returned to Watford in a second loan arrangement until January 2012 just hours after extending his Aston Villa contract. In August and September, he appeared three times for Watford in the Championship against Birmingham City, Reading, and Barnsley. To deal with growing injury worries, Weimann was recalled to his parent club early just under a month later, on September 23, it was revealed.

Back at the Villa

Weimann joined the team right away after his comeback for the away game against Queens Park Rangers. With Darren Bent out for the season after suffering an injury at Wigan, fans were asking for Weimann to play more frequently for the first team after he recorded two hat tricks in the reserves.

Weimann scored his first goal for Villa in the 92nd minute of the team’s 1-0 victory over Fulham on March 10, 2012, after replacing Charles N’Zogbia. Gary Gardner’s strike was the source of the goal, and when the Fulham goalkeeper botched it, Weimann reacted quickest to tuck the ball home and win over the crowd. In a 1-1 tie with Stoke City on April 9, he scored one goal and nearly added a second.

Weimann scored twice against Manchester United on November 10 at Villa Park, displaying his predatory instinct and shooting prowess in both goals. Weimann earned a standing ovation from the Villa Park crowd when he was replaced, despite the final score being 3-2 in favour of Manchester United.

Weimann scored twice for Villa on December 11, 2012, as they defeated Norwich City 4-1 to go to the League Cup semifinal. After a deft pass from Christian Benteke, he scored Villa’s second goal away at Liverpool four days later, indicating a strong partnership and mutual respect between the two.

On January 1, 2013, Benteke once again provided the assist as he scored against Swansea City. Later same week, he gave Villa a victory against Ipswich Town in the FA Cup third round that advanced them to the fourth round with an 83rd-minute goal. Weimann scored against Bradford City in the second leg of the semi-final after scoring in the first leg. He was a substitute. Villa was eliminated after losing 4-3 on aggregate, but the 89th-minute goal came too late. Weimann finished the season with 12 goals across all competitions, averaging one goal for every three games.

Derby County

On June 18, 2015, Weimann signed a four-year contract to play for Derby County. On October 31, 2015, in a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United, he netted his first goal for the Rams in the seventh minute. [36] Weimann joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan for the rest of the 2016–17 campaign after making only one league start during that time.

On January 21, 2017, he made his club debut by substituting in a 3-1 loss to Norwich. He earned his first start and notched his first goal for the team a week later, on January 28, 2017, in a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

Bristol City

Weimann committed to Championship team Bristol City on July 3, 2018, for an undisclosed sum, on a three-year deal with an option for an additional year. Weimann earned his first career hat-trick on March 30, 2019, when Bristol City defeated Sheffield United 3-2 at Bramall Lane. This brought his season goal total to 9, which is the most for any season.

Since Kevin Mabbutt scored three goals in 1978, no Bristol City player has scored three goals in the top two divisions of English football other than him. In the 2021–22 season, Weimann set a career-high for goals in a season with his 22 league goals.

Andreas Weimann International career

At the under-17, under-19, and under-21 levels, Weimann has represented Austria. On September 5, 2009, Weimann scored against Scotland Under-21 in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification game. Only two minutes after coming on as a substitute for teammate Marc Sand, Weimann scored in the 57th minute. The other two goals scored by Weimann in the qualifying round were against Albania and Azerbaijan.

Weimann was selected for the Austria U-19 team in July 2010 in preparation for the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. Weimann played in all three of Austria’s games and faced Nathan Delfouneso, an Aston Villa teammate, in a 3-2 loss to England. Weimann made his senior team debut for Austria on October 12, 2012, in a 0-0 draw with Kazakhstan.

Weimann received his first call-up in seven years in March 2022 when he was invited back to the Austria senior team for their 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off match against Wales. Weimann scored his first goal for Austria against France on June 10, 2022, giving Austria the lead in a UEFA Nations League match.
