AS Roma History

At the beginning of the 20th century, when football was gaining supporters throughout the Italian peninsula, and in Rome the situation was similar to what was lived in London.

As in the British capital, the practice of the sport was common in a large number of small clubs, each with its own particularities; they were usually teams of blocks, districts or even represented by well-defined social classes.

In the twenties, in the first regional division of the city of Rome, eight societies played: U.S. Romana, Fortitudo, Alba, Juventus, Roman, Audace, Pro Roma and Lazio.

The birth of Rome

The Capitoline team was formed thanks to the merger of three of the city’s football teams: Alba Audace, Roman, and Fortitudo Pro Roma.

This decision was taken in view of the wish of Italo Foschi, at the time secretary of the Roman Federation in the National Fascist Party, member of CONI, and president of Fortitudo Pro Roma.

The founding date of A.S. Rome is the focus of a great debate: many sources have, in fact, indicated that this would be July 22, 1927, but in reality, the merger had already been formalized on June 7 of the same year, as the main newspapers announced the next day. de Roma, Il Tevere, La Tribuna and Il Messaggero.

Foschi gave substance to the idea of having a sports team that would bear the name of the city of Rome and that could aim for greater results.

The same happened in Florence, Naples, and Bari, other cities in the center-south that gave life, through their mergers, to large-scale societies to support professional football in these regions, which was already practiced in northern Italy, which guaranteed them football domination.

Società Sportiva Lazio would also be part of the merger, but it was left out of the merger agreement after the intervention of the fascist general Giorgio Vaccaro, president of the club Albiceleste, who opposed the will of the Roman secretary of the PNF.

AS Roma was founded in 1927 and joined Serie A following the league’s formation in 1929. Relegated from the league only once, during the 1951–52 season, Roma is second only to Inter Milan in total from past seasons in Serie A. Roma has won the league title three times (1941–42, 1982–83, and 2000–01). The club has also won the Italian Cup nine times and the Italian Super Cup twice (2001, 2007). In addition, Roma has reached the Coppa Italia final seven other times.

The club plays at the Olympic Stadium in Rome; built for the 1960 Olympics and renovated for the 1990 World Cup, it can hold more than 80,000 spectators. The pitch is shared with Roma’s fierce rival, SS Lazio, and matches between the two tend to be intense.
