Ashley Barnes Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Ashley Barnes Club Career

Early career and Plymouth Argyle

Barnes played for Bath Arsenal when he was young. One of his teammates, Scott Sinclair, also went on to be a professional player. He started out in the Southern League with his hometown team, Paulton Rovers, where he scored a lot of goals. In March 2007, he had a long trial with the Championship team Plymouth Argyle.

He did well enough that the club gave him an 18-month contract after he scored several goals for the reserve team. In August 2007, he played his first game for Plymouth against Wycombe Wanderers in the first round of the League Cup. He took the place of regular first-team player Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and came on as a sub.

After that, he didn’t get many chances to play for the first team. In November 2007, he was sent on loan to the Conference team Oxford United to get more experience. Before going back to Plymouth, Barnes played five times for Oxford United, including two FA Cup games against Southend United. In March 2008, he went out on loan again, this time to another Conference club, Salisbury City. He played in five league games for the club, but he didn’t score any goals.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Barnes then went on loan to League One team Brighton & Hove Albion, where he will stay until the end of the season. Two days later, on his first game against Tranmere Rovers, he scored after coming on as a sub ten minutes earlier.

Barnes signed a two-year deal with Brighton & Hove Albion on July 8, 2010. He had moved there from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee. On April 12, 2011, he scored the game-winning goal in a 4–3 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge. This win made sure that they would move up to the Championship. Barnes finished the season with 20 goals for Brighton, second only to Glenn Murray. He played in 49 games.

Barnes was still Brighton’s first-choice striker when they went back to the Championship in 2011–12. At the end of the season, he had scored 14 goals for Brighton, 11 of which were in the league.

Burnley

Barnes joined Burnley on January 10, 2014, for an unknown fee and a three-and-a-half-year deal. On November 8, he scored the only goal Burnley needed to beat Hull City at Turf Moor and get their first Premier League win of the season.

On December 13, he scored his second goal, the only one in Burnley’s home win over Southampton, which got them out of the relegation zone. Barnes signed a new deal with Burnley in November 2019 that will last until June 2022.

In February 2015, Barnes made a high tackle on Nemanja Mati of Chelsea. In response, Mati pushed Barnes, which got him sent off. Barnes didn’t get a ticket for the challenge, and The FA said they wouldn’t take action after the fact because that’s not how things usually work when someone tries to tackle someone. Barnes was criticized in public by Chelsea manager José Mourinho, and Barnes said, “I thought that was funny.”

Barnes was taken off with knee cruciate ligament injuries on May 24, 2015, when relegated Burnley finished the season with a win over Aston Villa. He would miss most of the next season because of this.

Ashley Barnes International career

Even though Barnes was born in Bath to English parents, it was thought that because his paternal grandmother was from Klagenfurt, he could represent Austria if he could become an Austrian citizen. He was spotted by Austrian officials while on a pre-season tour with Plymouth Argyle in July 2008.

As a result, he was called up to their Under-20 team to play Switzerland on August 19, 2008. The match was part of a four-nation-friendly tournament with Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Barnes made his first appearance as a substitute in the 73rd minute. He replaced Julius Perstaller of FC Wacker Innsbruck in front of 250 people.

Barnes said in April 2015 that he had not heard from the Austrian Football Association since the previous year. He also said that he would be willing to play for either England or Austria at the senior level if he was given the chance.

In March 2017, while playing for Burnley in the Premier League, he again said that he could play for both England and Austria and that he wanted to play for the Austria senior national team. Austrians called for him to be called up to the national team during the 2017–18 season, and manager Franco Foda confirmed in March 2018 that he was keeping an eye on Barnes.

Barnes started the process to become an Austrian citizen in 2018, but it didn’t work out because the Austrian Ministry of the Interior turned it down in February 2019, making it clear that he can’t represent Austria.
