Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Benjamin White Club Career

Albion of Brighton & Hove

A Poole, Dorset, native, White began his youth career at Southampton and spent eight years there before being released at the age of 16. Following interest from Bristol City and Leicester City, where he initially joined their academy, Brighton & Hove Albion signed him. White didn’t play in the 0-0 draw at Derby County on August 6, 2016, in the league opener for the 2016–17 campaign. Three days later, on August 9, White made his debut in professional football, playing the full first-round EFL Cup game at home against Colchester United while the team won 4-0.

The following three league games against Nottingham Forest, Rotherham United, and Reading saw White remain an inactive substitute. His second appearance for Brighton occurred on August 23 against Oxford United, which Brighton prevailed 4-2, in the second round of the EFL Cup. On March 18, 2017, White was once more an inactive replacement, this time against Leeds United. Before Brighton U21s were defeated by Coventry City in the third round of the EFL Trophy, White also made three appearances during that competition.

On September 1, 2020, White signed a new four-year deal with Brighton, ending months of speculation about his future at which time Brighton turned down three permanent bids for White from Leeds. White made his league debut for Brighton on the first day of the 2020–21 campaign, making his Premier League debut in a 3–1 home loss to Chelsea before leaving the game with an injury.

In their subsequent league game, a 3-0 road victory over Newcastle on September 20, he assisted Brighton in maintaining a clean sheet. On January 10, 2021, White participated in Brighton’s FA Cup third-round penalty shootout victory over his old team Newport.

On February 3, White took part in Brighton’s 1-0 away triumph over reigning league champions Liverpool, which gave them their first league victory at Anfield since 1982. After a standout performance on April 20, White was dismissed for a second cautionable offence in the 90+2nd minute of a match in which he assisted Brighton in earning their first-ever point at Chelsea in a 0-0 draw.

He participated in Brighton’s 3-2 home victory over champions Manchester City on May 18 after the team overcame a 2-0 deficit. Since 1989, they have not beaten City in the league. White received the Player of the Season title on June 6, the same day that he made his debut for England, after a successful season that helped him break into the first squad.

To Newport County

White joined League Two team Newport County on loan on August 1, 2017, and manager Michael Flynn hailed the move as a “major coup for the club.” White will remain with Newport County through the end of the 2017–18 campaign. On August 8, 2017, White made his Newport debut in a 2-0 EFL Cup first-round victory over Southend United.

On August 12, 2017, he played against Crewe Alexandra in a 1-1 tie to make his Football League debut. On November 21, 2017, White scored his first Football League goal for Newport against Barnet in a 2-1 home loss.

For the first time since the 1978–1979 FA Cup, Newport advanced to the FA Cup fourth round on January 7, 2018, when White started for them in a 2-1 home victory over Championship team Leeds United.

Newport received a home draw against Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur in the next round. White was praised for his effort against Harry Kane on January 27, 2018, as Newport and Tottenham tied 1-1 to force a replay at Wembley Stadium, Tottenham’s temporary home.

Peterborough United is on loan

White agreed on a season-long loan with League One team Peterborough United on January 3, 2019. On January 5, 2019, he made his Peterborough debut against Middlesbrough on the road in the third round of the FA Cup, losing 5-0. White’s debut at the London Road Stadium coincided with his debut in League One, where he replaced Joe Ward in the 88th minute of a 2-1 victory over Rochdale on January 12.

White scored the second goal in a 2-0 home victory over Southend United on March 23, 2019, to register his first goal for Peterborough and first in League One.

White participated in the season’s final game, which Peterborough defeated Burton Albion 3-1 at home. However, as a result of Doncaster Rovers’ victory in their own game, The Posh narrowly missed earning a play-off position. [38] [39] White made 16 appearances during his loan period across all competitions, scoring once.

Leeds United is on loan

White joined Championship team Leeds United on loan for the conclusion of the current campaign on July 1, 2019. White extended his contract with Brighton by one year on the same day. Prior to the 2019–20 campaign, he received the number 5 jersey, and on August 4 against Bristol City, Leeds won 3–1 in his debut.

After putting on a strong showing throughout the month of August, White received the Championship PFA Player of the Month award for August 2019 on September 4. White was allegedly being scouted by Premier League team Liverpool in November 2019, despite Brighton head coach Graham Potter stating that White wouldn’t be recalled from Leeds and that his future will be at Brighton after his loan period was through.

White earned the Championship’s Best Young Player title on December 23, 2019, after sustaining his form, as chosen by Sky Sports readers. Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, kept an eye on White in January 2020. Southgate also kept an eye on White’s teammate Kalvin Phillips.

Arsenal

He made his Premier League debut on August 13 in the season opener against Premier League newcomers Brentford, starting and playing the entire 2-0 loss. Due to a positive COVID-19 test, White was unable to participate in Arsenal’s home match against London rivals Chelsea on August 22.

On September 11, after his comeback, he finally made his home debut at the Emirates Stadium, contributing to the club’s first league victory of the year with a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Norwich City.

On September 26, White participated in his first North London derby encounter against Tottenham Hotspur. He played the entire game as Arsenal won 3-1 at home. White made his first trip back to Falmer Stadium since leaving Brighton on October 2, when he started and participated fully for Arsenal in their 0-0 draw with Brighton.

Benjamin White International career

White was included in England’s preliminary 33-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020 on May 25, 2021. The competition would take place in the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s postponement the previous year. White had never before received a call-up to any level of the national team.

On June 1, seven players were cut from the team; nevertheless, those players were still included in the roster for the two exhibition matches against Austria and Romania. At the Riverside Stadium on June 2, during England’s 1-0 victory over Austria, White made his international debut by coming on as a substitute and taking Jack Grealish’s place. Alessandro Schöpf’s attempt was blocked by him, averting a late equaliser.

He became the fifth player from Brighton to represent England, and the second in less than three years after his captain and teammate Lewis Dunk was given the honour in November 2018. On June 6, during the second and last warm-up game against Romania, which was played at the Riverside Stadium once more, he got his first start and played the entire game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured, thus White was added to the 26-man roster for Euro 2020 as a replacement. England finished as the runners-up in the Championships event, and White did not play. The players who did not participate, however, were hailed by Southgate, who said that they were responsible for the team’s success.
