Club Career

Professional debut at Stade Malherbe

He demonstrates enormous qualities despite his status as a substitute goalkeeper and is one of the great hopes of the club and the France team. He played his first professional game on August 12, 2005by replacing Vincent Planté during the match between his team and the Stade de Reims.

On March 19, 2007, he extends his three-year contract with the Norman club, with the hope of becoming a starter in the club of his heart. The club finished the season in second place in the standings and reached Ligue 1.

Revelation in Ligue 2 (2008-2011)

In June 2008, he was loaned for a season to Vannes OC, to find playing time and a starting position. He is a starter in Ligue 2 and plays 27 games, only barred by an injury in the spring. He was credited with a good season in Brittany but, back in Caen, he was released from his last year of contract with Stade Malherbe, who preferred Alexis Thébaux as starting goalkeeper. Benoît Costil totaled fifteen games in three seasons with the Norman club.

June 17, 2009, Costil signed up with CS Sedan-Ardennes, which was then playing in Ligue 2, for two seasons and an additional one if they moved up to Ligue 1 . He finds Yohann Eudeline there, also a former Caen native, and plays his first match with his new team in the Coupe de la Ligue against his training club, for a 2-0 victory for the Sedanais after extra time. Holder in the Ardennes cages, he takes part in all of his team’s matches in all competitions during the 2009-2010 season. At the end of his contract in the Ardennes , Benoît Costil signed a three-year contract with Stade Rennes FC onJune 14 , 2011. He had a full 2011-2012 season as he took part in 51 matches in all competitions and played his first European matches in the UEFA Cup.

During his second season at the club, he was a finalist in the Coupe de la Ligue in 2013 against AS Saint-Étienne and then a finalist in the Coupe de France in 2014 against En Avant Guingamp.

He played his last match with Stade Rennes on May 20, 2017, being out of contract after six seasons in Brittany. A tribute is paid to him by the club and its supporters.

Pursuit in Bordeaux (since 2017)

On May 24, 2017, he signed up for four years with the Girondins de Bordeaux to replace Cedric Carrasso. During the 2018-2019 season, he was the union representative of the UNFP within the Girondins de Bordeaux.

While his club was a red lantern during the 2021-2022 season and attacked by some of the supporters, he announced following the 0-2 defeat against Montpellier on March 20 that he wanted to leave the Girondins before the end of his contract which ends in June 2022.

International career

On October 5, 2014, Benoît Costil has summoned for the first time to France A team by Didier Deschamps, following Stéphane Ruffier ‘s withdrawal, for two matches against Portugal and Armenia 10.

March 21, 2015, Costil took advantage of Hugo Lloris ‘ forfeit to know his second summons to Blue. He was then called up with the Blues in November 2015 and then in March 2016.

Benoît Costil is part of the list of twenty-three French players selected to compete in Euro 2016. He does not take part in any match and the Blues lose in the final against Portugal.

In Mid-November 2016, Steve Mandanda was injured in training the day before a friendly match against Côte d’Ivoire. This gives Benoît Costil his first cape, during which he makes a decisive save (0-0).

Costil is not retained among the twenty-three players summoned to play in the 2018 World Cup but is part of the list of eleven substitutes.

End August 2018, Costil is selected in the first list given by Didier Deschamps after the 2018 World Cup following the withdrawal of Steve Mandanda.

Stuart September 2020, he was called up as the third goalkeeper (behind Hugo Lloris and Mike Maignan ), in the France team by Didier Deschamps to face Croatia in the League of Nations. This selection again follows Steve Mandanda’s package, which tested positive for Covid-19.
