Ciaran Clark Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Ciaran Clark Club Career

Aston Villa

Early career

Clark was born in Harrow, London, and raised in Sandy, Bedfordshire. After joining Aston Villa’s youth academy at eleven, he captained the U18 squad to the 2007–08 Premier Academy League, the academy’s first league title. He was granted a squad number for the 2008–09 season and listed on the bench for Villa’s UEFA Cup match at CSKA Moscow, but he didn’t play. He led the reserves to their first Reserve League title by defeating Sunderland in the play-off final.

2009–10 season

Clark made his debut on 30 August 2009 in a 2–0 win over Fulham. The 19-year-old started with Carlos Cuéllar in defense after Curtis Davies was injured. He kept a clean sheet and nearly scored on his debut, but his header went inches wide. Garth Crooks of the BBC named the youngster to his team of the week.[10] Although the formidable partnership of new signings James Collins and Richard Dunne limited him to the bench, he was tipped to break into the first team regularly within several years. In November 2009, he signed a contract extension until June 2012.

2010–11 season

Clark started the first two league games of the 2010–11 season: against West Ham United and Newcastle United. Clark started Gérard Houllier’s first League Cup match as Villa manager against Blackburn Rovers. Due to the club’s injury crisis, he began against local rivals Birmingham City in midfield and continued against Fulham and Blackpool. Clark scored his first two club goals in a 4–2 home loss to Arsenal on 27 November 2010. On 2 January 2011, he equalized against Chelsea. He was the only Premier League player to get booked in six consecutive games in the same season.

2011–12 season

On 29 January 2012, Clark scored his first FA Cup goal for the club against Bristol Rovers with a solo run, stepovers, and a left-footed strike curled into the bottom corner.

2012–13 season

He was dismissed against Everton on 25 August 2012 for a professional foul on Nikica Jelavić. He scored his first goal of the season in a 1–1 draw at Newcastle United on 3 September 2012. After captaining Villa’s junior and reserve teams, Clark captained the senior team for the first time in a 0–0 draw at home to Stoke on 8 December 2012 after Gabriel Agbonlahor was substituted by Darren Bent. Three days later, Clark captained Villa for the entire 90 minutes in a 4–1 League Cup win at Norwich to qualify for the semi-finals.

2013–14 season

Aston Villa won 3–1 at Arsenal in Clark’s first game. During a slump midway through Aston Villa’s season, Lambert benched him in favor of Ron Vlaar and fellow academy graduate Nathan Baker. Clark made 28 games in a season that saw Villa finish 15th on 38 points despite injury and dismal results. His season totaled nine yellow cards.

Clark shattered Libor Kozák’s right leg in a training game in January 2014. The botched injury ended Kozák’s Premier League career.

2014–15 season

Aston Villa started the 2014–15 season well after Paul Lambert reintroduced Alan Hutton, Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos, and Aly Cissokho to the back four. Nathan Baker replaced Vlaar, with Clark on the bench. Clark and Jores Okore teamed up after Baker and Senderos were injured. Clark scored his first goal of the season from an Ashley Westwood free-kick in a 2–1 home win over Leicester.

Newcastle Utd

On 3 August 2016, Newcastle announced the signing of Clark. After establishing himself alongside club captain Jamaal Lascelles in central defense, he scored his first goal for the club in a 6–0 win over Queens Park Rangers on 13 September 2016. He added further goals against Brentford and Bristol City and helped Newcastle return to the Premier League at the end of the season by conceding the joint-lowest number of goals in the division. He started Newcastle league games in the first part of the next season. He was replaced by Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles in central defense for most of the second half. He scored three goals in eight Premier League games in 2018–19, against Arsenal, Burnley, and Chelsea. In November 2019, he revealed he contemplated quitting Newcastle United for the Irish national team. Newcastle signed Clark to a two-and-a-half-year contract on 20 January 2021.

Sheffield United loan

Clark joined Championship team Sheffield United on loan for the 2022–23 season on 13 July 2022. On 26 December 2022, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win over Coventry City.

Ciaran Clark International career

England

Clark led the England U19 team to the 2008 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He played in five of the six qualifying games and scored a goal. He didn’t play in the tournament because he hurt his ankle while training. After being moved up to the England U20 team, he was made captain and scored in his second game, a friendly against Italy in March 2008.

Ireland (Republic of)

At the end of September 2010, officials from the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) asked Clark to switch his allegiance. They sent Don Givens, a scout and former manager of the Republic of Ireland under-21 team, to watch him play against Blackburn. On October 5, 2010, it was said that Clark had promised to play for the Irish national team as long as he could because his parents were Irish.

Richard Dunne, a member of the same club team, helped convince him and had talked to FAI scouts about his eligibility. Clark was added to the Republic of Ireland team for the friendly against Norway on November 12, 2010. Then, on February 8, 2011, he played his first game against Wales at the Aviva Stadium. Clark scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland on February 6, 2013. It helped them beat Poland 2-0 in a friendly match.

In the first game of Euro 2016, when the Republic of Ireland played Sweden, Clark put a ball from Zlatan Ibrahimovic into his own net. This tied the game. Wes Hoolahan had given Ireland the lead earlier, but Clark’s mistake made it 1–1, so they both got a point. In November 2019, he said that he had once thought about leaving Newcastle United to stay in the Irish national team.
