Curtis Nelson Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Curtis Nelson Club Career

Plymouth Argyle

Nelson was a schoolboy when he first joined Stoke City and remained with the club for seven years before being released in February 2009. After waiting another two months, he finally joined Plymouth Argyle. His play for the youth team and reserves during the 2009–10 season, in both defence and midfield, earned him a berth in the first-team squad for the club’s final match of the season, which was against Peterborough United.

Peter Reid, the team’s manager, was impressed by Nelson’s performance during the first team’s pre-season training during the 2010–2011 season. When asked about young Curtis, Reid remarked, “I was quite impressed by little Curtis.” “I prefer younger players, and from this point forward, he will be putting in work alongside us. He started the season at centre back, although he also has experience playing midfield.”

After Anton Peterlin was taken out of the game in the first half of the second half of the League Cup match on August 10, 2010, he entered the game as a second-half substitute and made his debut with the first team.

In October 2010, he entered into his first professional contract, which stated that it would remain in effect until the conclusion of the 2011–12 season. Because of his play for Argyle, he was selected for the England under-18 team that competed against Italy in April of 2011. In the second half, he came on as a substitute for George Moncur as England played to a 1-1 draw.

During his first season, Nelson participated in a total of 35 matches in the league as well as three more in cup tournaments. As the season came to a close, he was awarded the title of Young Player of the Year by the club.

After starting the new campaign with the squad, Nelson was eventually replaced by Maxime Blanchard and Darren Purse, both of whom had been acquired by the club in November. Nelson suffered a knee injury in December, which resulted in a significant period of time spent on the sidelines. The new manager, Carl Fletcher, emphasized how crucial it was for Nelson to take as much time as he needed to make a full recovery from the injury.

Oxford United

On July 4, 2016, Nelson signed a two-year contract with Oxford United, a club that had recently been promoted to League One. That deal was later extended by one year. Because Nelson was an academy graduate who was under 24 years old and the two clubs were unable to come to an agreement over the transfer fee, an independent transfer tribunal was required.

The judge decided that the party must pay a cost of £200,000, with an additional £80,000 possible depending on the number of appearances. He was given the role of team captain before the beginning of his second season with the club, which followed John Lundstram’s departure from the organization. In November of 2017, he sustained a torn Achilles tendon while playing at home against Northampton Town.

As a result, he was unable to play for the balance of the season, and his fellow player John Mousinho took over as captain in his stead. On April 14, 2018, Nelson made an unexpectedly early return to the first team, appearing as a substitute for the club.

He was instantly given the captain’s armband, however, Mousinho eventually took over the role permanently. Nelson decided not to renew his contract with Oxford and left the club at the end of the 2018–19 season. During his three years with the club, Nelson participated in 121 matches across all competitions and scored 8 goals.

Cardiff City

On the 27th of June, 2019, Nelson completed a free transfer to join the newly demoted Championship club Cardiff City and signed a two-year contract with the club. His first game was a loss against Reading by the score of 3-0, and he entered the game as a substitute for Marlon Pack.

On November 2, 2019, he notched his first goal for Cardiff in a matchup against Birmingham City that ended in a 4–2 victory for Cardiff. On September 7, 2020, Nelson signed a contract extension for an additional two years, which will keep him working in the Welsh capital until 2023.
