Club Career
América
Lainez was recruited by talent scout Ángel González along with his brother Mauro. Mauro decided to enter the Pachuca quarry, while Diego chose to enter Club América.
On March 1, 2017, Lainez made his competitive debut for América in the Copa MX group stage match against Santos Laguna. Three days later he made his league debut against León, becoming one of the club’s youngest players to debut with the first team at the age of 16. On March 19, after a lineup error ruled out Gerson Torres from playing, Lainez was assigned as the starter against Pumas UNAM.
On August 4, 2018, Lainez scored his first two goals for América in a 3–1 win over Pachuca at the Estadio Hidalgo; he became the youngest player to score a brace for the club and the fifth youngest to score a goal in the club’s history. On September 18, Lainez suffered a sprained ankle in his left foot during training following a tackle from Bruno Valdez, forcing him to miss four weeks of action, including the Super Clásico against arch-rival Guadalajara.
