George Long Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

George Long Club Career

Long made his debut for the Blades in May 2011, starting the last game of the 2010–11 season against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. As a result, he became the youngest goalkeeper in the history of the Blades to play in a league game for the club at just 17 years and 183 days old.

Long was a squad member who battled their way to the FA Youth Cup championship game in 2011 but ultimately fell short against Manchester United. After making a few more appearances for the first team, in February 2012, he was given a new long-term contract that would keep him at Bramall Lane until the summer of 2016.

Long began the following season as the team’s second-choice goalkeeper, behind Mark Howard. However, when Howard suffered an injury in October of 2012, Long took over as the primary goalkeeper for the team. During his maiden spell in the club, he allowed only one goal to be scored against him in five league appearances.

As a result, he was named the League One “Player of the Month” for October and then named the Blades supporters’ Player of the Month for November 2012. Long kept his spot in the first team despite the signing of Danny Coyne, an experienced goalkeeper who had previously played for Wales, and in March of 2013, he was honoured as the Football League Young Player of the Month for February.

This was in recognition that he had kept six clean sheets in a row during the previous month. Long continued to be United’s first-choice goalkeeper throughout the season and concluded the year having appeared in 44 games across all competitions.

Long moved to Oxford United on a loan deal on July 25, 2014, to play first-team football after being demoted to the position of backup goalkeeper at Bramall Lane behind Mark Howard.

The loan was for six months. Nigel Clough, the manager of the Blades, recalled Shane Long from his loan at Oxford in November after Michael Appleton, the manager of the Oxford team, disclosed that Long was no longer a part of his plans and had been dropped from the first team to make room for additional loan signings. Long had been playing for Oxford.

Long joined Motherwell, a team that plays in the Scottish Premiership, on loan on February 2, 2015, and will remain there until the end of the 2014–15 season. Long was a key figure in Motherwell’s 6–1 victory over Rangers in the aggregate score of the Scottish Premiership playoff Final. This victory allowed Motherwell to maintain their position in the top tier.

Long began the 2015–16 season as Sheffield United‘s first-choice goalkeeper after making a successful comeback to the club and impressing Nigel Adkins, the club’s new manager. In spite of this, Long was replaced by Mark Howard following the team’s disheartening loss to Gillingham in the season’s opening game.

Long continued to play in cup matches and turned in a strong performance, saving two of five penalties during a shootout against Hartlepool United in the Football League Trophy. Long’s performance earned him the player of the match award. In the match against Southend United in November 2015, Long returned to the starting lineup.

Due to his strong play during December 2015, he was selected to the Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week on two separate occasions. The goalkeeper made his 100th starting appearance for Sheffield United in a League 1 game against Wigan Athletic on February 6, 2016. The game was played in 2016.

Although his team fell by a score of 0–2, he did make a penalty save during the game. Long put pen to paper on a two-year deal on June 9, 2016, with the club having the option to extend it for a third year. Chris Wilder is the new head coach of the team.

On July 4, 2017, he moved to AFC Wimbledon on loan for the upcoming season. After the club exercised the option year included in his contract for the 2018–19 season, Sheffield United placed him on the club’s transfer list after the 2017–18 campaign.

Long signed a deal with Hull City, a team competing in the EFL Championship, on July 18, 2018, for three years. On August 28, 2018, he made his debut for Hull in a match against Derby County at home in the second round of the EFL Cup. Hull was defeated by Derby County 0–4.

On 25 May 2021, it was announced that Long had opted not to sign a new contract with Hull City and instead signed for Millwall on a free transfer.

George Long International career

After coming on as a second-half replacement during England U18’s 1–1 draw with Italy at Carpi in April 2011, Long earned his debut with the team that month. After a productive 2012–13 season, Long was chosen for the tentative 35-man squad for the 2013 FIFA Under 20 World Cup. Subsequently, he was confirmed as part of the final 21-man team for the tournament.

Although Long participated in a pre-tournament practice match against Uruguay, he did not make any appearances in any competitive matches during the competition. Long was given his first call-up to the England U21 team on the 8th of August, 2013, for the match against Scotland U21s on the 13th of August at Bramall Lane, hosted by Sheffield United.

Upon receiving his first invitation to play for the U21s, Long commented, “The fact that it is taking place at Bramall Lane lends an air of mystique to the proceedings. I’m excited to go because I imagine there will be a fantastic vibe there, and the stadium will be full.”

Long was called up for the England U21 team for the first time under new manager Gareth Southgate on 27 August 2013 for matches against Moldova U21s and Finland U21s for Group 1 2015 U-21 Euro Qualifier matches[28]. Long was again called up for the England U21 team in November for matches against San Marino U21s and Finland’s U21s.
