Club Career

Sunderland

Jack Colback was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne, and Wear, and was a member of the Sunderland academy at the age of 10. On May 30, 2008, Colback made his professional debut with Sunderland. When the manager Steve Bruce announced his intention to lend out Colback to Ipswich Town on loan on 6 August 2009, on an agreement that was due to expire in January 2010. The player made his debut with Ipswich in a draw of 3-3 in the League Cup against Shrewsbury Town after extra time in the League Cup, which was won 4-2 after a penalty shootout. 

The player’s Football League debut came in the 2-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion after being made a sub in the 46th minute. The goal was his debut in the game for Ipswich in the match against Blackpool and then scored against them later during the season during the FA Cup. Jack Colback performance meant that the loan was extended to the conclusion of this season, which was in January of 2010. He was selected as Ipswich’s Players’ Player of the Season in 2009-10.

Colback began the opening fixture of the 2011-2012 season when Sunderland draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Sunderland was able to draw 1-1 in the game, with Colback working in the middle with Lee Cattermole in central midfield. On the 26th of December, 2011 Colback was the first player to score a goal at Sunderland, an effort that was deflected, in a 1-1 draw played against Everton during the Premier League. Jack Colback was positioned at the left-back position on New Year’s Day 2012 against Manchester City and helped Sunderland to win a surprising victory in the face of Sunderland, Premier League leaders. 

He was also left-back in Sunderland’s victory of 4-2 against Wigan just two days later in which he suffered an injury to his knee that kept him out for several weeks. On January 5, 2012, the club signed him to a two-year extension to his contract, which ran out in June 2014. Colback was injured again and came on as a substitute during the 1–1 FA Cup draw with Middlesbrough as well as re-joining the starting line-up in the middle of the field when the Black Cats beat Norwich 3-0 on February 1. Colback got his second strike for Sunderland using a left-footed shot in the replay game against Middlesbrough in the Riverside Stadium, as Sunderland defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 in extra time to progress to five rounds.

As his contract was about to end at the conclusion of the 2013-14 campaign, the manager at the time Paolo Di Canio urged Colback to take a final decision about what he would do at Sunderland. In November, Jack Colback stated that discussions of the possibility of a new contract had begun after initially denying an offer to sign a new contract during July under direction under the direction of Di Canio. Discussions on the possibility of a new contract commenced in February. In April, news broke that Colback rejected an offer to sign a new contract with the club, and was scheduled to quit the club upon the end of the term of his contract. A number of Premier League clubs made contract offers to accept Colback however Sunderland refused to compromise on Colback and was hopeful that Colback would remain with the team.

Newcastle United

On the 9th of June, 2014 Jack Colback joined Newcastle United via a no-cost transfer. He was one of the few players since Lionel Perez in 1998 to move directly out of Sunderland 1998 to Newcastle. As a loyal supporter of Newcastle Colback, he acknowledged that because of their rivalry Sunderland supporters will “hate him for the rest of his life”. Sunderland condemned Colback’s transfer to Newcastle United, and described the move as leaving a “bitter aftertaste”.

Colback made his first competitive appearance on the 17th of August, as Newcastle started this season in a 2-0 loss at home against Manchester City, playing the entire 90 minutes. Colback got his goal for the first time for Newcastle on December 28 during a 3-2 victory over Everton by snatching a Ross Barkley clearance to score Newcastle’s third goal of the match. A few days later, Colback scored in his second consecutive match, scoring a goal of 25 yards in the draw of 3-3 against Burnley.

Jack Colback was a target for Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign a loan agreement at the end of August 2017. He declined the offers due to geographic reasons and instead began training with his junior squad. He was not part of the official team picture of the club in the 2017-18 campaign. Benitez justified his absence by claiming that his club “had selected the team prior to”.

Nottingham Forest

In January of 2018, Jack Colback joined Championship club, Nottingham Forest, on loan for the remainder of 2017-18. After his arrival at Forest Colback, he alleged Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez of ignoring the player during his time in the Newcastle United club saying that Colback was “treated as an item as a human being”. The following month of July Colback came back to Forest for a season-long loan with the obligation of making a permanent move after the league season.

Following the transfer permanent to Forest was not made, Colback remained at Newcastle for another season until he returned to Forest with a no-cost transfer from the 11th of August in 2020. Jack Colback was living in Nottingham following returning to Newcastle United, as his family and wife were moved to the city. Colback’s third Forest debut was on 12 September, losing in an attempt against Queens Park Rangers.

International career

Jack Colback has earned one cap for the England under-20 squad, and the team won 2-0 in a friendly win over Italy in the Italian stadium of Loftus Road back in the month of March. He was substituted for Marc Albrighton in the 79th minute, as a substitute. On the 28th of August, 2014 Colback was given his debut call-up to the senior squad to play with Norway and Switzerland but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to an injury to his calf.
