Kalinga Stadium History
The Odisha government gained a widespread reputation for the successful execution of the “90 Day Challenge” for hosting the 2017 Asian Championships in Athletics when the former venue, Ranchi, withdrew from hosting the event 3 months earlier. The city of Bhubaneswar has been dubbed the “Sports Capital of India” for hosting a large number and wide variety of sporting events and nurturing up-and-coming talents. According to a 2021 survey, Bhubaneswar ranked 3rd among the top 5 cities in India in terms of sports ecosystem and ability to host mega sports events.
The stadium had been chosen to host the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which was later postponed to 2021 but canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later changed to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in FIFA 2022. It was initially chosen to host the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2021 but was later abandoned.
