Keira Walsh Early Life

Keira Fae Walsh was born on 8 April 1997 in Rochdale to Peter and Tracy Walsh and was raised by the Pennines in Syke, a rural area of the town. She played football with her father on the field across from their house from about the age of five. She played for local boys’ teams Pearson Juniors under-7s and then Samba Stars – both coached by the father of her primary school best friend, who originally took her along – until she turned eleven.

Walsh attended Haslingden High School and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School Sixth Form, both in Rossendale; Haslingden High School had girls’ football teams in the first few year groups, in which Walsh played. She joined Manchester City, the team she and her family support, in July 2014, when she was seventeen; City sent her to St Bede’s College in Manchester to finish her A-Levels while she practiced and played with them. Future friend Georgia Stanway would also attend St Bede’s.

Though a dedicated Manchester City fan, having had pet fish named after Shaun Goater and Nicolas Anelka, Walsh was inspired as a child by Spanish football in part due to having family in Spain and often playing in the country when visiting them, and because her father encouraged her to watch Barcelona play. She also briefly backed Arsenal, due to being a fan of Cesc Fàbregas, until she saw David Silva, her favourite player, with City.

In 2008, aged eleven, Walsh was named Greater Manchester Young Sports Person of the Year. She was named number 1 in the county in under-13 badminton between 2007 and 2009, having taken up the sport aged nine and representing Rochdale. She also played cricket for Lancashire, representing Rochdale in swimming and netball, and played football with the Blackburn Rovers Girls’ Centre of Excellence at the time.

Eleven Blackburn Rovers players were included in the 2013 Lancashire Schoolgirls football team, including Walsh, who led the side. She played for them in 2012 and 2013 for the Northern Counties Championship and English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) County Cup. In both years, they won the Northern Championship and were runner-up in the ESFA Cup.

Keira Walsh Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at her Football career so far.

Keira Walsh Club Career

Blackburn Rovers

2008–14 youth

Walsh joined a Football Association (FA) Skills Centre at Kingsway Park High School at age eleven, where Fara Williams trained her. Her childhood coach recommended her for trials at the Blackburn Rovers Girls’ Centre of Excellence, and she joined in 2008. Blackburn Rovers’ under-12 to under-17 squads were hers. At Blackburn, she switched from right-footed left-back and centre-half to centre-midfield. When a new under-14 coach suggested, she attempted the position.

Despite playing defence and midfield, Walsh scored four times in six games in her debut year with Blackburn’s young teams. In the 2013 FA Girls’ Youth Cup final against Arsenal, she almost missed an opening goal for Blackburn’s under-17 squad, who lost. Walsh scored ten goals for Blackburn Rovers under-17s in the 2013–14 season, including a hat-trick in the 2014 FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Sunderland.

2014 senior

Walsh joined Blackburn Rovers’ first squad as a halftime replacement in February 2014, aged 16. Walsh’s signing helped the club avoid relegation after a bad start. Walsh played nine FA Women’s Northern Premier League matches for the first team, scoring three goals, including the team’s goal of the season, a “stunning” second goal against Derby County in March that saved Blackburn from relegation.

She also played in the FA Women’s Cup fourth round and the Lancashire Women’s Challenge Cup final, when she was named the best player despite the team’s loss. After six seasons with Blackburn Rovers, she left in 2014.

Man City

2014

Walsh started seeking a Women’s Super League (WSL) squad shortly after turning seventeen while playing for Blackburn Rovers’ under-17s. Despite Manchester City, her favourite team, entering the WSL and hosting tryouts, she joined Everton’s development squad without trial. Walsh’s mother persuaded her to attend the City development squad trials in July 2014.

Before the session, first-team coach Nick Cushing, who had gone as an observer, sought to sign her as a playmaking midfielder. Cushing later said that Walsh has “the best football brain” of any player he has taught, adding that “God almost touches some players”. Walsh deflected compliments, arguing that Cushing’s coaching style benefits technical and tactical players.

Walsh made her Manchester City debut as a substitute in a 1–0 win over Notts County in July 2014, 10 days after the City trials. Too young for a professional contract, she officially trained with the development squad, for which she never played; at the end of the 2014 season, she frequently started in the first team. She started the 2014 League Cup final for City.

She begged her parents not to travel for the game because she didn’t expect to play, but Cushing’s faith in her before the match encouraged her to believe in herself and succeed. “Leaving the footballing world intrigued,” she marked England legend Kelly Smith out of the game.

2015

Walsh signed her first professional deal with the club in June 2015 until the end of 2017 but was injured for most of the year. Manchester City added her to their 2015 League Cup roster in August. However, the FA “might have” lost the registration documentation for the alteration, forcing City to be briefly suspended for fielding an unregistered player before the issue was remedied. The probe postponed City’s quarterfinal loss against Arsenal. City finished second in 2015, qualifying for the Champions League. Cushing built the team around Walsh, making her a vice-captain.

2022–23

City played two Champions League qualification matches in August 2022 during the 2022–23 pre-season. Walsh left the club in September after eight years, eight major championships, and 211 appearances, tied with Houghton for the club record. Walsh posted on Instagram, “Even though I will no longer play in the shirt, City is in my blood and always will be.” She later revealed she had no plan to leave the City in the summer of 2022, so it was a hard decision, but she thought it was time to leave her comfort zone.

Barcelona

2022–23 transfer

Walsh was courted by “several top European clubs” after the 2021–22 season, including Chelsea and Barcelona. In the summer of 2022, prominent City women’s players retired or left on a free transfer. Chelsea and Barcelona bid heavily for Walsh, despite women’s football rarely attracting transfer costs. After star midfielder Alexia Putellas’ injury and other departures, Barcelona needed to bring in reinforcements and made several offers to Walsh.

Sports director Markel Zubizarreta stated Walsh was not meant to replace Putellas but to provide coach Jonatan Giráldez with an alternative playing style. Barcelona’s final offer, over £400,000 (up to €470,000 with bonuses), was accepted soon before the transfer deadline on 7 September 2022. This was much greater than Pernille Harder’s £250,000 move in 2020 and Barcelona’s €50,000 purchase of Mapi León in 2017. While “the price tag is a nice feeling,” Walsh prefers not to be the centre of attention. She joined England teammate Lucy Bronze at Barcelona for three years.

Keira Walsh International career

Youth

Walsh, twelve, became the youngest England under-15 girl when she was called to train in November 2009. They had her in 2010 and 2011. She only played one big competition for England in all youth age divisions. She later thought her lack of youth experience may have made her unprepared for international tournament criticism when she joined the senior group.

Walsh was a significant vice-captain player in the 2013 under-17 women’s team. She scored two goals in the July 2013 Nordic Tournament, including one in the first minute of the play-off against Iceland. She was selected as a forward for the 2014 UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship in November and December 2013, helping England finish fourth. She scored England’s last penalty kick in the 0(3)–0(4) third-place play-off loss and was named to the tournament’s team.

After recovering from injuries, she led the under-19s at the March 2015 La Manga Tournament in Spain. In March 2016, she had another ankle injury while on under-19 international duty at La Manga. Walsh pulled out of a September 2016 under-20 event. Walsh won the 2017 Nordic Tournament with the under-23 team at La Manga.

Senior

England

Walsh and Williamson were first called up to the senior England squad by interim coach Marley for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification campaign in November 2017. She assisted in England’s first match against Kazakhstan that month. She was nominated for the 2018 England Women’s International Young Player of the Year alongside Beth Mead. Walsh, 21, the youngest player in the squad, captained England for the first time during these qualifications, commencing with the armband in England’s last match against Kazakhstan in September 2018, in her seventh senior appearance; England won 6–0.

Walsh played three SheBelieves Cups for England. In 2018, Walsh’s debut team finished second against the United States after an own goal by the keeper. Walsh and manager Phil Neville had a “really honest” talk after the match to set a goal for her development throughout the year and boost her confidence. Walsh, one of three players who played every match, assisted the winning goal from a long distance in 2019.

After Walsh helped the team win the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, Neville claimed she was arguably the greatest midfielder and praised her improvement in the group. He then suggested veteran Karen Carney mentor Walsh during the 2019 Women’s World Cup, her first major tournament.

“Sarina Wiegman is not bothered that we make mistakes,” Walsh said during the 2022 Euro campaign. She won’t criticize us for our mistakes. She knows that’s part of the process, which gives me the confidence to try those passes”. Walsh repeated the statement in a press conference after being named player of the match in England’s first game following the Euro, a 2–0 win over Austria to qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

Walsh earned her 50th England cap in the last qualification group game, a 10–0 triumph against Luxembourg on 6 September 2022. European champions England won the 2023 Women’s Finalissima in April 2023, defeating Copa América champions Brazil 1(4)–1(2) on penalties. Walsh was awarded player of the match.

Walsh’s matchday shirts will bear legacy numbers as the 200th England women’s international. She was selected for the July 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Walsh was Fara Williams’ “heir apparent” as England’s midfield anchor in her early years. Since 2019, Walsh has been “an automatic starter for England, a name on the teamsheet that is never questioned,” with sports media and individuals stating that her status in the England squad is unmatched.

The UK

Walsh played three times for Great Britain at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Walsh’s first effort at goal in the quarterfinals hit the post as Team GB lost to the Matildas. Walsh struck again in extra time, but a fingertip save stopped it.
