As long as it’s unique within its squad, Premier League players can wear any number between one and 99, although tradition dictates that you’ll generally see top teams wear one up to around 30, with a few exceptions.

Man City youngster Cole Palmer holds the record for the highest number in Premier League history, with the number 80.

Also following tradition, the goalkeepers will generally occupy the numbers one and 13.

Premier League players can’t wear the number zero, and that’s just because it would be a bit silly.

Can Premier League players change team numbers?

Premier League players can only change their team number during pre-season or if one is sold or loaned to another club in the January transfer window.

Clubs must submit their confirmed squad list, including jersey numbers, by a specific deadline each year, and the numbers cannot be changed thereafter. In 2021 that deadline was September 1.
