5. Wayne Mark Rooney

4. Denis Law (1962 – 1973)

Denis Law, the original King of the Stretford End, was deadly in front of goal. A third of the Holy Trinity along with George Best and Bobby Charlton, the Scot weighed in with 237 goals in 398 starts between 1962 and 1973.

He was voted European Footballer of the Year in 1964, and was unlucky enough not to have been at Wembley when United lifted the European Cup in ’68: he was in hospital having knee surgery.

However, his prowess on the pitch for United earns him number two on our list.

Denis Law CBE, a former Scottish footballer, played as a forward. In 1956, he began his football career at Huddersfield Town’s Second Division. He was released from Huddersfield after four years. Manchester City paid a transfer fee of PS55,000 to sign him. This set a new British record, he joined the club and played his first match against West Bromwich Albion that same year. 

Law scored 237 goals in 404 games during his Old Trafford career.

When he joined the club, Law was a world-record signing.  During his time at Old Trafford, he also scored four hat-tricks. He proved that every dollar spent on him by Manchester United during his transfer from Scotland to England was well-spent. Denis Law was the first North player to be awarded the European Player Of The Year award. 3. Jack Rowley (1937 – 1955)

John Frederick Rowley was an English footballer who was a striker from the 1930s through the 1950s. He was remembered mostly for his 17-year stint with Manchester United. The nickname he earned was “The Gunner” due to his prolific goal-scoring ability and rapid shooting.

He scored scores of 211 goals in his 424 matches for United.

With a deadly left foot that earned him the name “Gunner,” Jack Rowley led the Reds to glory in the postwar period when Matt Busby’s vision for United was realized.

In his prime, Rowley, like his equally talented brother Arthur was among the most sought-after strikers in the nation great in the air as well as on the ground.

Rowley was signed by the Reds for a fee of PS3,000 in 1937 following brief stints with his home team Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, where he scored 10 goals in 11 games. In his debut campaign in the club’s first full season at Old Trafford, he helped United to finish second within the Second Division and their first return to the top of the league in 1931.

2. Bobby Charlton (1953 – 1973)

Sir Robert Charlton CBE is a former English footballer who played either as a midfielder or a forward. Considered one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the year in which he also won the Ballon d’Or.

He played 758 matches and scored 249 goals.

1. Dennis Viollet (1949 – 1962)

Dennis Sydney Viollet was an English footballer who played for Manchester United and Stoke City and also for his place on the England nation’s team. He was a star member of the famous Busby Babes and was able to survive the Munich air tragedy.

A number of great strikers have played on this Old Trafford stage, but none has come close to Dennis Viollet’s record-breaking 32 league goals during the 1959/60 season.

Possessing speed and positional awareness, Viollet scored 179 goals in 293 games for United and made United’s fourth-highest goalscorer, alongside George Best.

On January 22, 1962, Viollet was released from his old club Trafford and joined Second Division Stoke City, where he was awarded the Second Division Championship medal (1962/63) and made it to the League Cup final (1963/64).
