Club Career
Youth football
Born in Wiesendangen, Manuel Akanji started his youth career there with the neighborhood club. Akanji switched clubs in May 2007 and played for FC Winterthur’s youth squad. He initially joined their Under-18 team and eventually joined their second level. He started for Winterthur in the 2014–15 Challenge League after appearing in two games for them the season before.
Basel
Akanji’s transfer to Basel for the 2015–16 Super League season was announced on April 15, 2015. On September 26, 2015, against FC Lugano, he entered the game as a substitute to make his Swiss Super League debut. Manuel Akanji won the Swiss Super League championship under coach Urs Fischer at the conclusion of the 2015–16 Super League season and again at the conclusion of the 2016–17 Super League season. This victory marked the club’s 20th championship triumph overall and their eighth title in a succession. They also won the Swiss Cup for the twelfth time, making it the sixth time in club history that they had accomplished the double.
