Here, we take a closer look at her Football career so far.
Marie-Antoinette Katoto Club Career
Katoto began her career as a young player in 2005 with Colombes FFC. In 2011, she started at Paris Saint-Germain Academy. She scored 27 goals in 26 games for the club’s youth teams and helped them win the 2016 Championnat de France National Féminine U19 title.
Katoto made her first appearance with the senior team on April 26, 2015, when they played VfL Wolfsburg in the second game of the 2014–15 UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals. In a 5–0 win over Rodez the following week, boss Farid Benstiti put her in the league for the first time. She was on the field for the full 90 minutes and scored a goal.
Katoto scored 21 goals in the 2017–18 Division 1 Féminine season, which put her in second place behind Ada Hegerberg, who won the Ballon d’Or Féminin. On May 31, 2018, she scored the game’s only goal, which helped her team win the 2017–18 Coupe de France féminine final against Lyon, which had won it six times in a row.
Katoto scored two goals in a league game against Guingamp on February 5, 2022. This put him ahead of Marie-Laure Delie as the team’s all-time top scorer.
International career
Youth
Katoto has played for France at different levels of youth soccer 35 times and scored 24 goals. She was on the 2016 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship-winning French team. She scored the most goals in the event, with six, and was chosen as the best player. She was also on the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup team that made it to the semi-finals.
Senior
Katoto’s first game with the senior team was on November 10, 2018, when they beat Brazil 3–1 in a friendly. She replaced Delphine Cascarino as a replacement in the 66th minute. On January 19, 2019, she got her first goal for her country in a 3–1 friendly win over the United States. France’s coach, Corinne Diacre, had been critical of Katoto’s attitude and play in the weeks before the game.
In May 2019, Katoto was not on the 23-person team that Diacre chose for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was held in France. Katoto had been the top scorer in the French league the year before the choice was made.
Diacre, on the other hand, supported her choice by saying, “It was a hard choice, but I made it, and I stand by it.” If we don’t win the World Cup, I’m sure people will blame me.” Even so, the United States beat France in the quarterfinals and went on to protect their title.
Katoto got her first hat trick for the national team on September 17, 2021, when Japan beat Greece 10–0. During France’s match against Belgium in the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, Katoto got a “serious” knee injury that kept her out of the rest of the tournament. On February 24, 2023, she said she would no longer play for the national team after leader Wendie Renard said she would step down to protect her mental health. Katoto said that she thought how the team was run should be changed.
