Martyn Waghorn Club Career

Tyne and Wear’s South Shields is where Waghorn was born. Waghorn began playing for his hometown team Sunderland when he was eight years old and advanced through the Academy of Light’s youth program to the under-18 squad. On December 12, 2007, Waghorn scored his first hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Norwich City in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. A few days later, he scored twice on penalties in a 4-2 victory at the Academy of Light over his neighborhood rivals, Newcastle United.

Liverpool City

Waghorn rejected Carlisle United’s interest and joined Leicester City on loan on August 6, 2009, staying there until January 11, 2010.

With the equalizing goal in a 2-1 victory over Swansea City, Waghorn made his professional debut for Leicester City as a replacement. Waghorn admitted that despite playing in all 11 of his first games for Leicester City as a substitute, he was happy to be an impact player. Against Reading, he made his league debut for Leicester City and scored the game-winning goal. In a 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, Waghorn scored his first pair of goals as a professional. On April 28, 2010, the club named him Young Player of the Year for his overall efforts.

On May 12, 2010, in the second leg of the Championship Playoffs semi-final against Cardiff City, Waghorn missed the final penalty kick, resulting in a 4-3 loss on penalties. During his loan tenure, he made 28 starts for the team and scored 12 goals. On September 12th, 2013, Waghorn, who had only played as a substitute twice for Leicester, signed a three-month loan agreement with Millwall. On September 14th, 2013, he scored in his debut game against Derby County. In a 5-2 loss against AFC Bournemouth on October 5, 2013, he scored his second goal for the team.

Wigan Sports

Waghorn joined Wigan Athletic on loan on January 31, 2014, and will remain there through the end of the campaign. On February 8, 2014, he made his professional debut in a Championship game against Huddersfield Town, ending in a 1-0 loss. Ten days later, he scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic against Barnsley. On April 4, 2014, Waghorn permanently joined Wigan Athletic after making nine appearances and tallying three goals.

Along with James Tavernier, a colleague from Wigan, Waghorn signed a three-year contract with Scottish Championship team Rangers on July 20, 2015. Due to superstition, he continued to use the number 33 as his squad number with this club and prior ones. On July 25, 2015, in a 6-2 victory over Hibernian in the Scottish Challenge Cup, Waghorn scored twice in his debut for Rangers. On August 30, 2015, he scored twice from the penalty spot in a 5-1 loss to Queen of the South. On September 5, 2015, at Ibrox, he scored twice from the penalty spot once more in a 5-0 victory over Raith Rovers. On September 21, 2015, he extended his offensive dominance by scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over Dumbarton.

Suffolk Town

Waghorn signed a two-year contract to play for Ipswich Town on August 7, 2017. In a 2-1 victory over Barnsley five days later, he scored the game-winning goal on his league debut. After scoring on his league debut, he added two more goals in a 4-3 away victory over Millwall the following week. On August 19, he scored in his third straight league game, a 2-0 home victory over Brentford at Portman Road. In his first year with the team, Waghorn regularly started the Ipswich first team. In a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on the road on March 6, he scored twice, including a late free kick from outside the 18-yard box. On April 2 against Millwall, in a game that finished in a 2-2 tie, he scored another brace. With 16 league goals, he concluded the year as the club’s leading scorer.

County of Derby

Waghorn reportedly planned to transfer from Ipswich to Middlesbrough[66] after the 2017–18 campaign. However, Derby County stepped in at the last minute, and on August 8, 2018, it was revealed that he would join the Rams. Waghorn was assigned the number 9 and became Frank Lampard’s sixth signing. On August 11, he made his professional debut against Leeds United in a 1-4 loss.

A loss for The Rams would have resulted in their relegation to League One at Wednesday’s expense on the last day of the 2020–21 season when Derby faced Sheffield Wednesday. With the score 2-3 in favor of the visitors in what would turn out to be his final game for Derby, Waghorn stepped up to take a penalty. He saved the team from relegation by completing the kick, which would ultimately be the game’s final goal.

Coventry City

Waghorn signed a two-year contract with Coventry City on July 2, 2021, after his deal with Derby expired. Waghorn failed to maintain a regular spot in The Sky Blues’ starting lineup in 2021–22. He only scored once during the year, the decisive goal in a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Waghorn finally scored his second Sky Blues goal after 404 days with a crucial penalty kick late in a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.
