Matt Crooks Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Matt Crooks Club Career

Huddersfield Town

After spending some time at the Manchester United Academy, he signed his first professional contract with Huddersfield Town in 2009 and became a member of the academy’s inaugural graduating class.

In October of 2010, he was included in the Town squad that travelled to Plymouth Argyle for their League One encounter, and then a few days later, he was named on the bench for the Town’s FA Cup meeting against Cambridge United. Both of these matches took place in October.

Before the start of the 2011–12 season, Crooks was one of the many young players anticipated to be loaned out to get experience playing for a first team. Despite this, Crooks signed his first professional contract with the club in November, keeping him there until 2014.

Crooks was nominated for League One Apprentice of the Year on February 9, 2012; however, he lost the competition to Jordan Cousins of Charlton Athletic. The news of Crooks’ nomination was made public on February 9.

He did not make any more appearances for Huddersfield during that season. On October 21, 2014, he went to Hartlepool United on an emergency loan for one month to provide defensive cover. It was reported that Crooks would return to the club after concluding a month-long loan with Hartlepool United.

Crooks had already made three appearances for the club before the announcement. After only three days back at his parent club, he was loaned out again to a team in League Two, Accrington Stanley, where he will remain until the 3rd of January. Crooks resigned from his position at Huddersfield Town on February 2, 2015, after the mutual decision to end his contract.

Accrington Stanley Football Club

Three weeks later, on February 24, 2015, Crooks returned to Accrington Stanley and signed a contract with the club for an additional 18 months.

Crooks was tipped to have a big future in the game by Accrington manager John Coleman after he had a solid start to the 2015–16 season, which saw him score an extra-time equalizer against Hull City in the Football League Cup and a 90th-minute compensation against Notts County in League Two. Crooks also scored an equalizer against Notts County in the 90th minute.

In January 2016, it was reported that the Scottish club Rangers had contacted Crooks and his teammate Josh Windass to have them sign pre-contract agreements. Crooks was already playing for a club in the United States.

Andy Holt, chairman of Accrington, was irritated by the talks because, according to FIFA standards, Rangers was only required to pay a modest amount to successfully complete the trades of both players. The next day, both players agreed with Rangers over pre-contracts to see them joining the club in the summer of 2016.

On July 1, 2016, Crooks made his move to Rangers official by signing a four-year contract with the club. His fellow Accrington player Josh Windass also signed the same deal. Both players had previously been practising with the club before completing their signings after Rangers reached an agreement with Accrington on a compensation sum, which was reportedly around £60,000 per player.

Due to an ankle ligament injury, he was sidelined at the beginning of the 2016–17 season. However, in late August, he made his comeback in a match for the under-20 team against St. Mirren. Crooks made his debut with the first team on September 20, 2016, in a match for the Scottish League Cup against Queen of the South.

He came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute of the game. Crooks has, however, only made a few irregular appearances for the club since then. As a result, many people criticized the transfer policy that was in place when Mark Warburton was the manager of the Rangers.

Northampton Town (English)

After making only three appearances for Rangers FC, Crooks officially moved to join the English League One side on July 18, 2017, for a transfer fee that has not been disclosed.

Crooks scored the quickest goal ever in a competitive encounter at Sixfields Stadium when he scored his first competitive goal for the Cobblers on September 9, 2017, against Doncaster Rovers. This was the quickest goal ever scored in a contest played at Sixfields Stadium.

Rotherham United

Crooks signed a contract with Rotherham United on January 11, 2019, committing to the club for the next three and a half years and paying an undisclosed transfer fee to join them in the EFL Championship. Crooks was a member of the team that was immediately promoted after the season was cut short due to the widespread Coronavirus epidemic. This came about directly from the Millers’ demotion to League One.

After an outstanding performance for Rotherham during January 2021, which included scoring three goals, Crooks was recognized as the EFL Championship Player of the Month.

Crooks completed his transfer to Middlesbrough of the EFL Championship on July 23, 2021. He signed a three-year contract with the club, and the transfer fee was not disclosed. On August 14, 2021, he contributed to Middlesbrough’s 2-1 home victory over Bristol City by scoring his first goal for the club.

Crooks scored once more four days later, on August 18th, 2021, during a home loss to QPR that ended in a 3-2 score. Thieves were given a straight red card and sent off in the 87th minute of his team’s 1-0 league loss on the road against Reading on August 25, 2021.

After filing an appeal, Middlesbrough was successful in having the judgment reversed and the red card removed from their player’s record. Crooks led Reading to a 2-1 victory at their home stadium on January 15, 2022, thanks to two goals scored with his head, including the game-winning goal in stoppage time.
