About Paraguay National Football Team

The Paraguay national football team (Spanish: Selección de fútbol de Paraguay) represents Paraguay in international men’s soccer competitions and is controlled by the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol (Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol).

A regular participant in the Copa América, Paraguay has been crowned champion of the competition on two occasions (in 1953 and 1979). Paraguay’s highest FIFA world ranking was 8th (March 2001) and its lowest was 103 (May 1995). Paraguay obtained second place with the Best Play of the Year in 1996 for its rise in the FIFA Ranking.

Paraguay National Football Team History

Copa America Centennial 2016

Prior to the competition, the Paraguayan press had pointed out Roque Santa Cruz, Nelson Haedo, Paulo da Silva and Justo Villar as historic, being the only four experienced players and veterans of the squad selected for the competition. Santa Cruz suffered an injury and was later replaced by Antonio Sanabria.

After an unsuccessful campaign, Ramón Díaz announced his resignation as Albirroja coach at a press conference at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium after returning to the country. He had already received criticism from former Albirroja great José Luís Chilavert, who stated that the team was managed based on “friendship” in the federation due to corruption and opined that Díaz is more of an office worker.

José Cardozo, former Albirroja top scorer and current coach of Chiapas in Mexico, also expressed his dissatisfaction with Albirroja. He stated that: “There are players who don’t even know our national anthem” and “We played until we got injured a lot, and we played because we loved La Albirroja.
