Portsmouth Home Stadium

Portsmouth FC play their home games at Fratton Park, in the Portsmouth suburb of Milton. The football ground was previously the site of a potato field in 1898 when it was bought by the newly formed Portsmouth Football & Athletic Company, formed on April 5, 1898, a consortium of local businessmen and former British Army officers whose chairman was Sir John Brickwood. , the owner of Brickwoods Brewery.

Fratton Park was designed and completed during 1899 by local architect Arthur Cogswell, first opening to the public on August 15, 1899, an open day. The early Fratton Park of 1899 had only one covered all-seater grandstand on the south side of the pitch, measuring 100 feet long and seven rows of seats high and known as the Grandstand, the best (and only) seats in Fratton Park. Directly in front of the Grandstand was a terraced standing room.

Portsmouth Kit

In their first season of 1899–1900 in Division One of the Southern League, Portsmouth’s first home colors were salmon pink shirts with a maroon collar and cuffs, paired with white shorts and black socks. The pink jerseys gave the first Portsmouth F.C. the second alternate nickname of ‘The Shrimps’. The collars and cuffs were the same color as the Portsmouth Corporation public streetcars, which at the time were painted maroon. These colors lasted until the end of the 1908-09 season. The nickname ‘The Shrimps’ also declined from common usage.
