About Preston North End

Preston North End Football Club, commonly known as Preston, North End or PNE, is a professional football club in Preston, Lancashire, England, currently playing in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Originally a cricket club, Preston has been based in Deepdale since 1875.

The club first began playing American football in 1878 as a winter fitness activity and decided to concentrate in May 1880 when the football club was officially founded. Deepdale is now a league club’s oldest football ground in continuous use.

Preston North End was a founder member of the Football League in 1888. In the 1888–89 season, the team won the inaugural league championship and the FA Cup without conceding a goal. They were the first team to achieve the “Double” in English football and, as they were unbeaten in every game, they are remembered as “The Invincibles”.

Preston won the league championship again in 1889–90, but their only major success since then has been their 1938 FA Cup Final victory over Huddersfield Town. The club’s most famous players have been Tom Finney and Bill Shankly, commemorated in Deepdale by stands named after them. Other notable players include Tommy Docherty, Alan Kelly Sr., Graham Alexander, and Paul Gallagher.

Until 1961, Preston used to be a member of the First Division, but, having been relegated after the 1960-61 season, they have yet to return to the top flight. They were first relegated to the Third Division after the 1969-70 season and have spent 28 of the 49 seasons since 1970 in the bottom two divisions of the Football League, including a span of 19 seasons from 1981-1982 to 1999-2000.

Preston has faced severe financial problems and was twice in danger of closure. The club was owned by businessman Trevor Hemmings until his death in October 2021 and has been in the EFL Championship since gaining promotion in 2015.

As football grew in popularity, it became necessary to have raised areas. Thus, the idea of soccer stands was formed. In the 1890s, Preston built the West Paddock, which ran along the touchline, and a tent was erected to house the changing rooms. At the turn of the century, crowds regularly exceeded 10,000 people, and in 1921, they had to expand again.

The Spion Kop was built, and the West Paddock was extended to meet the end of the Kop. The pitch was removed to allow construction of the Town End, which was completed in 1928 but destroyed by fire five years later and had to be rebuilt. The Pavilion Stand, a relatively small split-level stand housing changing rooms and offices, was built and opened in 1934.

The league record attendance for Preston North End at Deepdale is 42,684 against Arsenal in the First Division on April 23, 1938. The women’s Dick, Kerr’s Ladies team also used to play in Deepdale, often beating professional men’s teams in front of large crowds. During the 1960s and 1980s, significant changes occurred, as the stands were roofed, the seats were installed, and the stands were enlarged.
