Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium History

Sevilla’s old stadium, Estadio de Nervión, was too small for the club’s goals, so Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán was built to replace it.

Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, who was president of the club at the time, bought the land for the new stadium in 1937. But nothing more was done until 1954, and construction didn’t start until 1956.

A few weeks before construction began, president Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán died unexpectedly, and his successor promised to name the stadium after him.

On September 7, 1958, Sevilla FC and Real Jaén played the first official game at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

At first, the stadium didn’t have a second level on either end. In 1974, these levels were added, making the whole stadium enclosed and bringing the total number of seats to 70,000.

During the 1982 World Cup, one of the games took place at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Before the tournament, it was fixed up, which cut the number of people who could fit inside to 66,000. During the World Cup, it was the site of two games: one group match and the semi-final between West Germany and France (3-3).

In 1986, the European Cup final between FC Steaua and Barcelona was held at the stadium. After shootouts, the Romanian team won.

In the 1990s, the stadium became an all-seater, which cut the number of people who could fit inside even more.

In the early 2000s, Sevilla had plans to add an extra level and a new roof to the stadium and make it more modern. However, these plans never got off the ground and were put on hold.

In 2015, smaller plans for redevelopment were shown. They included a facelift for the inside, improvements to the facilities in the concourse, and a new front. The old red-and-white seats were replaced right away with new red-only seats, and the new facade was finished by the end of 2016.

Parking

In Seville it is considered almost like a second center, so we can find many difficulties to park, as in the historic center, but without restrictions. We find blue zone in almost all the streets, and a quite high circulation traffic.
