Risa Shimizu Club Career

Tokyo Verdy Beleza

After playing for the youth team of Tokyo Verdy Beleza, the club with the most titles in the top level of women’s football in Japan, Shimizu was moved up to the adult team when she was seventeen years old.

She played her first game in the Nadeshiko League on March 23, 2013, against FC Kibi IU Charme. In her first season as a pro, she made 24 starts in all competitions and became the first choice right back.

On June 15, 2014, she got her first goal for the club in a game against the same team she played against in her first game. Shimizu played in every single Nadeshiko League game in 2015, and he was a key part of the team that won the championship that year, ending a five-year wait for a home title.

Since then, she has won many prizes with Beleza, including five straight domestic titles, five Empress’s Cups, three Nadeshiko League Cups, and the first AFC Women’s Club Championship. She had already won the local triple crown with Beleza, which she did in both 2018 and 2019.

Shimizu is one of the most reliable players in the league. She was chosen for the Nadeshiko League Best XI for the first time in the 2017 season. Since then, he has been chosen for the Best XI for five seasons, including the first season of the revamped and fully professional WE League.

She was named club captain in 2020.

After almost a decade with the club, Shimizu left Tokyo Verdy Beleza in August 2022.

West Ham F.C.

Shimizu signed a two-year deal with English team West Ham United on August 28, 2022. She played her first game for the team on September 19, 2022, when they beat Everton 1-0.

Risa Shimizu International career

2010 was the first time Shimizu was asked to train with the Japan U-14 national team. The next year, she went to Nanjing, China, to play in the 2011 AFC U-16 Women’s Championship. She was picked to play for the Japan U-17 national team at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where she scored in a win over Mexico in the group stage.

The Japan national team beat Switzerland 2-0 in the MS&AD Cup on October 22, 2017, her first game as a full-time player. She played in her first international event as a senior at the 2018 Algarve Cup. She came in as a substitute against the Netherlands.

Shimizu became the national team’s starting right back that same year. She started all of Japan’s games in the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which they won by beating Australia 1-0 in the final to win their second straight title. This was followed by a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, where Japan beat China with a goal in the 90th minute to win 1-0.

She was chosen to be on Japan’s team for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France and the 2020 Summer Olympics in her home country. In both events, she started all her games and played the whole game in each one.

Shimizu was also on the team that won the EAFF East Asian Football Championship in 2019 and 2022. In 2022, Japan was named the Most Valuable Player when she was undefeated.

She was one of the 23 players chosen for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 team on June 13, 2023.
