Romaine Sawyers Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Romaine Sawyers Club Career

West Bromwich Albion

For the final game of the 2008–09 season, Sawyers was initially added to the West Bromwich Albion substitute bench. After that, he was offered a professional contract by the team. He did, however, miss the majority of the 2009–10 campaign due to a knee injury. He and Kayleen Brown joined Jim Gannon’s Port Vale on 21 January 2011 on a month-long loan.

Two days later, in a 1-0 loss to Cheltenham Town at Vale Park, he made his League Two debut for the team, coming on in place of Adam Yates. However, this would be Sawyers’ only match for the squad; the pair returned to The Hawthorns once the loan period was through with Sawyers having played in just one more first-team game.

Walsall

Sawyers signed a loan agreement with League One club Walsall in March 2013; manager Dean Smith stated “He’s a gifted young man who can support the lead singer. It’s great to have him on board since I know how highly Albion esteems him.” He played four times as a substitute for the team. In June 2013, West Brom released him. In July 2013, Sawyers signed a one-year permanent contract with Walsall after being released from West Brom; Dean Smith noted that despite the player’s limited playing experience on loan, he had a great attitude and promise.

He scored his first goal from 25 yards in a 1-1 draw with Notts County on August 17, 2013, to celebrate his first professional start for Walsall. In 49 appearances, he scored seven goals to conclude the 2013–14 campaign. He also agreed to a new two-year contract with the team.

Brentford

On July 1, 2016, Sawyers reconnected with Dean Smith, his former Walsall manager, when he signed with Championship team Brentford. On the first day of the 2016–17 season, he made his “Bees” debut in a 2-1 away loss to Huddersfield Town. On October 28, he scored his first goal for Brentford in a 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, the other team in the West London derby. With three goals in 45 games, he helped Brentford finish in tenth place for the 2016–17 season.

He served as the main conduit between the defense and the offense. Brentford concluded the 2017–18 season in ninth place thanks to his five goals and five assists in 44 games. He was hailed as “one of the star performers at Griffin Park this season with his touch and passing range dazzling many.” He received two awards: Community Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year from the Brentford team.

Return to West Bromwich Albion

Sawyers signed a three-year contract with West Bromwich Albion on July 27, 2019, after being acquired for an undisclosed sum (reportedly £2.9 million). Sawyers said, “This is the team that I have always wanted to play for.” We targeted him as a player who will improve the caliber of our midfield, according to manager Slaven Bili. To pay honor to former midfielder Jason Koumas, he decided to wear the number 19 shirt.

In a 3-0 victory over Bristol City on February 22, 2020, he was dismissed after placing his hand on the throat of ex-Walsall teammate Jamie Paterson. Sawyers was ranked as the ninth-best player in the EFL by FourFourTwo magazine after a hiatus in action brought on by the COVID-19 outbreak in England.

He finished the 2019–20 campaign with one goal in 43 appearances, helping the “Baggies” clinch the second automatic promotion spot in the Championship. He was also included in the PFA Team of the Year for the Championship.

Loan to Stoke City

Sawyers signed a loan deal with Stoke City in the Championship on August 20, 2021, for the 2021-22 season. We didn’t anticipate that Romaine would become available, according to manager Michael O’Neill, but we moved quickly to recruit Sawyers after he dropped behind Jake Livermore and Alex Mowatt at West Brom.

Sawyers played for Stoke in 29 games and scored three goals during his loan period, which was cut short by a leg injury that kept him out for two months.

Cardiff City

Following his release from West Brom on July 6, 2022, Sawyers signed a two-year contract with Cardiff City. According to “Bluebirds” manager Steve Morison, “it’s important having those extra bodies in every position we can” since “we can make five changes this season.”

Romaine Sawyers International career

In the second round of the Caribbean Football Union’s qualifying process for the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, Sawyers played for Saint Kitts and Nevis national under-23 football team.

He scored four goals in the team’s three games. He was promoted to the entire squad for the 2012 Caribbean Cup qualification. At the Warner Park Sporting Complex in Basseterre, he made his debut by scoring a goal and claiming an assist in a 2-0 victory over Anguilla.
