Sam Coffey Early Life

Youth

Coffey was an all-American and five-time “Region 1 team” member at Match-Fit Academy and New York Soccer Club. At the Master’s School, she was team MVP all four years and captain for two. High school player of the year three times, she scored 100 goals.

Boston College

In 2017, Coffey joined Boston College Eagles soccer. As a freshman, she led the team in assists and points. She was her team’s co-rookie and Boston College’s Freshman Scholar-Athlete. As a sophomore, she helped the team reach the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament, their first since 2015.

The Hermann Trophy semi-finalist led the squad in goals and assists. She was an All-ACC first-teamer, ACC midfielder of the year, and United Soccer Coaches first-team All-American. She made All-ACC Academic Team both years. She started all 40 games in her two seasons, tallying 17 goals and 24 assists.

Penn State

In December 2018, Coffey announced his transfer to Penn State University to play for the Nittany Lions in 2019. She started lessons in January 2019. She has 32 points in her junior season, scoring 11 goals and 10 assists. She scored a penalty kick in the final versus Michigan to force extra time and help the team win the 2019 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Championship.

Stanford won the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament after defeating the team 2–0 in the round of 16. Captain Coffey scored 6 goals and 12 assists in 16 matches during her senior 2020–21 season, which was postponed until the spring semester due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Penn State lost to eventual runner-up Florida State in the 2020 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament’s round of 16. Due to the epidemic, Coffey played her fifth college season as a graduate student in 2021. The squad lost to South Carolina in the round of 16 of the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament despite her 8 goals and 8 assists in 21 games.

Coffey was All-Big Ten and All-North Area’s first team all three seasons. She made the 2019 US Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team and 2020–21 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team. She was named 2020–21 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and Senior CLASS Award First Team All-America. She was CoSIDA Academic All-District’s first team in 2019 and 2020. Coffey scored 25 goals and assisted 30 in 62 Penn State games. She became the 50th NCAA Division I player with 40 goals and 40 assists with 42 and 54 in 102 games.

The Portland Thorns FC

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA gave all student-athletes an extra year of eligibility. Coffey decided not to enter the 2021 NWSL Draft because she didn’t know what her future would be like. She was still put in the draught, though, and Portland Thorns FC picked her with the 12th overall pick in the second round.

But in the end, she chose to stay at Penn State and play soccer for another year. The Portland Thorns signed Coffey to a two-year deal on January 7, 2022. She played her first game for the team on March 18, 2022, in the NWSL Challenge Cup. She played the whole game, which was a 1-1 draw against OL Reign away from home. She played in her first NWSL regular season game on April 30, 2022. It was a home win over the Kansas City Current by a score of 3-0.

Sam Coffey International career

Youth

Coffey played for the United States youth teams when he was 18, 19, and 20 years old. She went to six training camps and played in two international games with the under-18 team. At the under-20 level, she was part of the U.S. team that went to Trinidad and Tobago for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship.

After losing the final on penalties to Mexico, the team came in second place. But the team still made it to the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France, even though Coffey didn’t make the team.

Senior

Coffey was called up to the United States women’s national team for the first time in June 2022. She played two friendly games against Colombia. Even though Coffey had never played for her country before, she replaced Ashley Hatch after she got hurt during the group stage of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship.
