Cauley Woodrow Early Life

Woodrow was educated at the Hemel Hempstead School in his hometown of Hemel Hempstead, also located in Hertfordshire. His father, Martin Patching, played football at the professional level in the past. When Woodrow was a little lad, he was a Tottenham Hotspur youth program member.

Before the start of the 2007–2008 season, he joined Buckhurst Hill. In one of his earlier matches, he was responsible for scoring eight goals, and in 2008, he was a member of the side that competed in the national finals of the Tesco Cup, representing the South of England. Woodrow was awarded the prize for best forward in the competition, even though his team was eliminated in the semi-finals.

After that, he signed on with Luton Town, a club that plays in the Conference Premier. In the summer of 2010, he was a member of their under-15 team that advanced to the final of a tournament featuring forty teams and the young players of several major European clubs. Then, in September of that same year, he scored six goals in an FA Youth Cup qualifying match played against Cogenhoe United.

He made his senior debut on 14 December, twelve days after his 16th birthday, as Luton won an FA Trophy first-round replay away at Welling United. When he was still 15, he was an unused substitute for the first team’s FA Cup encounter at Corby Town.

On 14 December, he made his professional debut for Luton. Woodrow participated in the FA Trophy a further two times, first against Uxbridge, where he assisted on the scoring of the third goal in a 4–0 victory, and then against Gloucester City, when he won the free kick from which Luton scored the lone goal of the game and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Cauley Woodrow Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Cauley Woodrow Club Career

Early years with Fulham

A “very healthy sell-on clause” was a part of the contract when Woodrow joined Premier League team Fulham in March 2011 for a “six-figure” fee that could increase to seven figures depending on the player’s future development. After graduating from high school in July, he accepted a scholarship offer from the club.

On his 17th birthday, he signed a professional deal lasting 2.5 years. Despite having his first season cut short by injury, he could still play for the reserve team, train occasionally with the first team, and score in the final of the 2011–12 Premier Academy League as Fulham defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-1.

He also scored twice as Fulham overcame a deficit to knock Manchester City out of the 2011–12 FA Youth Cup at the last 16 stages. His strengths were highlighted as “scoring goals, creative movement, and awareness around the box” in a December 2012 article on Fulham’s website.

In 2013, Woodrow competed for Fulham’s under-19 team in the Dallas Cup. While his squad defeated Kashiwa Reysol’s youthful players 5-1 to win the competition, he had a penalty saved but still managed to score twice. In 2013, he led Fulham’s under-18 team to a second consecutive Premier Academy League championship. Woodrow agreed to extend his contract until 2016 before the 2013–14 season.

Woodrow made his Premier League debut on March 8, 2014, playing 75 minutes of Fulham’s 3-1 loss to Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium. On the season’s final day, Woodrow scored his first goal for the team in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Loan to Southend United

On September 2, 2013, he signed a one-month loan agreement with League Two club Southend United. Five days later, in a 3-1 loss against Morecambe at home, he made his Football League debut after being named to the starting lineup.

He participated in the game’s opening hour and nearly scored with a header. Following two starts and two cameos, Woodrow’s loan was extended for another 28 days. On October 8 against Dagenham & Redbridge in the Football League Trophy, he scored his first goals as a senior. He was introduced at halftime with Southend behind by a plan.

After just six minutes on the pitch, he headed in the equalizer from Ben Coker’s cross. He gave his team the lead three minutes after the goalie could only parry Brian Saah’s shot. Dagenham & Redbridge scored four goals in seven minutes to win 5-2.

In November, the loan was extended until May 4, 2014, with the possibility of an additional extension should Southend make the playoffs. Only four minutes after entering the game against Portsmouth as a second-half substitute, Woodrow was sent for elbowing an opponent.

Despite having fewer players, Southend overcame a goal behind at the time of the event to win 2-1. On Boxing Day 2013, Woodrow came off the bench and scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute of a 1-0 victory away at AFC Wimbledon. On January 29, 2014, Fulham ended his loan because they were unhappy with how few games he had started for Southend.

Additional loans

After making just one league start for Fulham during the 2016–17 campaign, Woodrow joined Burton Albion on loan on January 27, 2017, for the remainder of the campaign. In the fourth minute of the stoppage time of the club’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 4, 2017, he scored his first goal for the team with a close-range shot.

On August 17, 2017, Woodrow agreed to a one-year loan with Bristol City.

On September 16, 2017, he scored his first goal for Bristol City in a 4-1 victory over Derby County.

Barnsley

Before a potential permanent transfer, Woodrow joined League One team Barnsley on loan on August 24, 2018, with an expiration date of January 2019.

He made a permanent transfer to Barnsley on January 3, 2019, for an undisclosed sum and a two-and-a-half-year deal with an additional year’s option in the club’s favour.

In May 2019, he agreed to a new deal that would last until 2022.

Back to Luton Town

Woodrow re-signed for Luton Town in the Championship on June 21, 2022, after an absence of 11 years. He also scored the game-winning goal against Norwich on Boxing Day.

Cauley Woodrow International career

In February 2011, the England under-17 team competed in the Algarve Tournament, and Woodrow was given a spot on the squad. Since Bob Oates of Ashley Road in 1974, he was the first non-League footballer to play for an England young squad. When he made his debut, scoring the equalizing goal in a 1–1 draw with Romania, he became the first non-League footballer to play for an England youth team.

In England’s other two matches in the tournament, against Germany and Portugal, he came on as a substitute in the second half of each game. In May of 2014, he received his first call-up to the England U21 team in preparation for the Toulon Tournament and the European qualifiers that summer.
