Huerta, the daughter of electrical engineer Mauricio Huerta and Jody Jensen Huerta from Puebla attended Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. She played basketball, track, and soccer. Sofia Huerta Club Career

Chicago Red Stars 2015–2018

On January 16, 2015, the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL drafted Huerta in the collegiate draught. She was the eleventh player selected overall. On May 9, 2015, with teammate and United States international forward Christen Press away at World Cup training camp, Huerta scored her first two professional goals in a 3–0 win over Boston Breakers to put the Red Stars at the top of the NWSL league.

She was named NWSL Player of the Week for week five. In week six of the NWSL season, Huerta scored two goals against the Houston Dash to tie the score. Huerta played forward and midfield in the NWSL Second XI in 2015 and 2017. The NWSL Media Association named Huerta Player of the Month for April.

On June 16, 2018, it was announced that Huerta would be unavailable for Chicago’s match that night against the Portland Thorns due to a pending trade. On June 18, 2018, Huerta and Taylor Comeau were traded to the Houston Dash as part of a three-team trade that also included the Utah Royals. Huerta had requested the trade in hopes of getting more playing time as an outside back, the position USWNT coach Jill Ellis had Huerta playing for the United.

Adelaide United loan

In October 2016, Huerta was loaned to Adelaide United, along with Red Stars teammates Katie Naughton and Danielle Colaprico. Playing in the midfield, she scored 8 goals and had 5 assists in a 12-match season. She was named Professional Footballers Australia Player of the Month for the W-League in January 2017. At Adelaide United’s annual award ceremony, she was named W-League Player of the Year.

Houston Dash 2018–2019

After joining the Dash on June 18, Huerta scored the Dash’s only goal in a 3–1 loss to Portland on June 22. She played 12 games and scored 5 goals. NWSL Second XI Huerta.

Sydney FC loan

Sydney FC signed Huerta for the 2018–19 W-League season on September 28. She joined Sydney along with former Red Stars colleague Danielle Colaprico, Aubrey Bledsoe of the Washington Spirit, and Savannah McCaskill of Sky Blue FC. Sydney agreed to play Huerta at outside defence in hopes of getting her back into the USWNT.

Huerta played every minute of Sydney’s 2018–19 season. She scored a goal in Sydney’s 2–1 semi-final win over Brisbane. In the Grand Final, Sydney defeated Perth 4–2 to win the 2018–19 W-League Championship. Huerta scored again.

Reign, 2020

Houston traded Huerta and Amber Brooks to OL Reign on February 3, 2020, for Shea Groom, Megan Oyster, and a conditional draught selection.

Sofia Huerta International career

In August 2012, Huerta did not make the U.S. team for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. Instead, she was chosen for the Mexico team, which she was eligible to play for because her father was from Mexico. Even though her elbow was broken, she scored three of Mexico’s seven goals in a two-win, two-loss game.

Huerta played football for the Mexico women’s national team at the City of So Paulo International Women’s Football Tournament in December 2012, where she scored two goals. She also got her first helper for the U.S. when she passed the ball to Alex Morgan in the 79th minute of her first game. Huerta was the first woman to play for the U.S. national team and against the U.S. national team (as a member of the Mexico national team).

Huerta was on the provisional roster for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, but she did not make the final list of 20 players. After being invited to every camp in the past year, she hasn’t been called up to the USWNT since June 2018.

Because of this, Huerta has been looking for club opportunities to play outside back in the hopes of getting back on the roster. In 2022, the USWNT called Huerta back up to play in the qualifiers for the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. Huerta and Veronica Zepeda are the only two women who have played for both the U.S. and Mexico women’s national teams so far.
